  • Battery changing advice that works 11 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Many moons ago, my father taught me that when removing or refitting a car battery, always disconnect the positive lead second, and reconnect it first. The reason? If, whilst swinging the spanner round to do/undo terminal posts you touch the bodywork or engine, no short circuit will be completed
  • Omega V6 thermostat : Where is it ? 17 Dec 2003 (Forum)
is evey easy and straight forward. It is not obvious to me exactly where the thermostat is !!. both of the main connections to the rad lead to some very inhospitable places on the engine so much so that I cannot get to or see anything which resembles a thermostat housing. Does anyone know where I can
  • Mystery Motorway Exit... 17 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone know where the mysterious 'Works Exit' junction lead to that's situated between J14 & J13 east bound on the M4? I've heard that it's some sort of secret nuclear bunker or even a missile storage site. The fact that the sign is permanent - and not a temporary flimsy ?works traffic

  • our Fred 12 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Just watched Fred Dibnah explaining the engineering skills and achievments of our ancestors. It makes one proud of this small island nation which could lead the world in feats of engineering and skills. Should be mandatory to teach this in our schools instead of alien cultures. And today we don't
  • jetta ignition problem 3 Nov 2001 (Forum)
in the ignition. The Crypton tester shows an intermittent (every 10 to 40 seconds) loss of spark, the Crypton signal "breaking down in the middle of the scale as if turning up a resistor in the ignition circuit". He has borrowed the following components from other vehicles: coil, ECU, amplifier, leads and has

and good except that the revs still don't die as quickly as they should do (leads to jerky gear changes in the lower gears), and the new induction noise is dreadful (sounds like a sports manifold/exhaust). Its going in for its 12 month service on Thursday, so I would appreciate any (constructive) advice
  • Diesel injector Wear. 18 Apr 2001 (Forum)
Refering to the Golf TDI, HJ wrote a few weeks ago: "85K IS ROUGHLY THE MILEAGE WHEN THE TDI'S INJECTORS NEED REPLACING. THEY WILL CONTINUE TO FUNCTION AS THEY ARE, AND YOU WON'T NOTICE MUCH DROP OFF IN ECONOMY, BUT THE SPRAY PATTERN WILL BECOME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE, LEADING TO PREMATURE BORE WEAR
  • Old Polo rickety starting 28 Mar 2001 (Forum)
My old ('87) Polo 1.3 is reluctant to start on cold mornings. I changed the spark plugs to no avail. It still seems to fire up one cylinder at a time. Once it's warmed a little it runs fine. I haven't been able to replicate the problem for a garage. The coil, cap, rotor and leads are all Bosch

continued for several minutes and when it stopped he tried again. The ignition as turned on and the whirring noise began again. It was coming from the back of the engine. This time the car would not turn over and it was left parked up. Suspecting a starter motor problem I disconnected the +ve lead from
  • Golf Mk3 1.8 Misfire under load 20 Mar 2005 (Forum)
replaced the HT leads and WD40'd everything, but this didn't help, so the car was at a local garage last week to try and fix this. The garage reckoned they had fixed the problem by replacing the distributor (not cheap!). Since having the car back from the garage it still doesn't start straight up
  • MG - Roadster 1970 1.8 running problem with classic car 18 Jul 2009 (Forum)
