Citroen Xsara Diesel Revs 28 Jul 2004 (Forum)
In the FAQ section, it says you should run a diesel to 4,500rpm a couple of times a week. Is this true for all cars? I have a S-reg Xsara and the red section on the rev counter starts at 4,750rpm. It's not often I get above 3,000rpm in normal driving. The car runs great but fails its emissions bit of the MoT every year - is this coz of how I drive? -
Car by Car Breakdown 27 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Or are the faults in reality limited to a small number of cars, with general reliability being pretty good? Due to experiences in my Dad\'s old Renaults and Citroens as a kid, I have a phobia about unreliable cars. His Renault 16 used to overheat on every long trip. -
Growly noises 24 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Anyone old enough will remember, for example - - Morris Minor 1000 (for some reason, not the 803) on the overrun - first gear in one of the Austin Counties - Devon, Hampshire etc - the two-stroke diesel Commer lorry of the 50's. Newer cars seem less memorable - perhaps you can think of more recent sounds. The Subaru flat-four perhaps. -
Bi-Xenons 22 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I have recently seen 2 year-old cars of all makes with one bulb failed. Obviously not true?. 2. My wife?s car has Bi-Xenons fitted..they work OK but there is a warning label under the bonnet stating that they must only be changed by a dealer, plus there is a warning 'Warning: Risk of Death! 25,000 Volts DC? -
volvo 1.8 GDI engine fuel query 13 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I have recently picked up a volvo s40 GDI at auction (see new car advice thread). http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=21008 In honestjohn\'s car by car breakdon he notes that this engine is designed for 98 ron unleaded and faults have occurred wehere cars have used lower standard octane rated fuel. Could anyone explain this in more detail, the guide book and sticker in the filler cap says use 95 octane unleaded. -

Black Boxes to monitor tuning mods 15 Mar 2004 (Forum)
In future once black boxes are fitted, all ECU mods and tuning devices will be detectable and not only will the vehicles warranty be invalidated, but the true vehicle`s history will be made available to the used car buying public. -
Mondewoe going, PCP for the replacement? 8 Mar 2004 (Forum)
After a lot of searching I have got a Primera 2.2cDi SE 5 door quote at 12000 miles per year for 2 years or 3 years inclusive of vat etc but not maintenance for £230. This seems to be very good. I know its not the Mazda but the 6,s come out at a lot more as does the Avensis. If anyone can recommend a leasing company to try I would be most gratefull. Bill -
Totally unrealsitic dealer values 20 Jan 2004 (Forum)
My local Ford dealer has had a base spec 1.3 escort (S reg) sitting on its forecourt for almost six months now with a screen price of £3999. A quick look at price guides suggest he will do well to get half this for it, yet the price has not changed at all. -
Am i being silly- buying a E34 530 V8? 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I have seen a few last of the line 530 V8's advertised and selling for around £3k. These cars have the M60 Nikasil lined V8, which can lead to bore wear. How much of a concern should this be when contemplating a purchase? Will all those likely to fail have done so by now, and are problem cars easy to spot-how? -
Vauxhall Monaro V8 9 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I see from my local paper\'s Motoring Section (Oxford Times 24th October 2003) that Vauxhall have officially announced the launch of a rebadged version of the Aussie Holden Monaro...a V8 coupe version of the Holden Commodore. The Australian original was launched at a motorshow in 1999 or thereabouts as a concept car and won such accolades that it was in production in 2001 for the Australian market. -

323i E46 2000 model transmission light 30 Oct 2003 (Forum)
BMW diagnostic computer reads an error code for 'Anti Spin Control', but nothing about the gearbox. Before he starts handing over ££££££s, does this model have any known gearbox or electrical gremlins please, that could be causing his problem? Many thanks -
Part comparison between Rover 200 & 400 28 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I am particularly interested to know if the armrest is identical because I want to put one in my MK III 200, but am having no luck finding one in scrapped 200\'s. I would be greatful for any info because the rear part of the consul on my 200 is broken and flaps about the place!! An armrest would be the perfect replacement, would add a bit of class to!!! Cheers in advance, Mike. -
Idea to beat depreciation 1 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I was researching on the idea of buying a used car with an average budget of 5000-6000 , when i saw an offer which seems extremely good. This was a discount of £3500 on the new Almera 1.5 S bringing the price down from £10750 to £7245. This is a straight 33% off the list price of the car! Now assuming the depreciation to be 30% after an year , if one were to sell off this car even after an year , there would only be a minimal loss if at all any! -
Anyone got a Glass's guide handy? 25 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Can anyone value this car, I can't find anything on any of the online Glass's guide links I have, and Parkers is a joke. It's a 51 plate, carbon black 54,000 miles, SMG, roof, 19''s (Hmmm....) and HK stereo. They're asking £31k on Autotrader or £29985 on their local site - That's from a BM dealer. I don't do a lot of miles so the high mileage will even out. Worth it? -

Concept cleaning 14 Jul 2003 (Forum)
This may only refer to serious valeters, as far as I am aware concept gear is not available on the shelf\'s but in bulk buy only to the trade. Well I use concept for valeting, most of the stuff is good, but recently I changed my glass cleaner. I used to use Concept \"squeaky\", unfortunately my supplier run out of this and only had Concept \"squeaky XL\". -
VW New Polo rumbling noise. 24 May 2003 (Forum)
I have a new Polo S 1.4 and at speeds over about 20 mph a rumbling noise from the front of the car becomes evident. This is still present even in neutral so is not engine related. At first I thought it might be tyre noise (Firestone F-590) but it seems too heavy a noise so possibly is drive shaft related.
