  • Drag 20 Sep 2006 (Forum)
(Subject of thread changed from "The Unbelievable HJ Column" to "Drag") Some of you will have read the HJ column in the Telegraph http://tinyurl.com/hjyzx in which a reader tells of the improvement in fuel consumption achieved by putting mountain bikes inside the car rather than on a bike rack
  • 1999 Toyota Starlet 1.3 11 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I am about to buy a car to teach my 17 year old daughter to drive in. Her mum has happy memories of learning in a Toyota Starlet 20 years ago. Our neighbour is selling her immaculate 1999 5 door 1300 with 79,000 miles for £1500. We've had a drive and whilst I wouldn't rate it against more modern
  • UK Vehicle Insurance Abroad 22 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My UK car insurance certificate with MMA is entirely in English. No green card can be issued or necessary now apparently for EU. Asked my broker was this normal and they said situation was the same for all companies they deal with. IIRC I used to have a multilingual declaration on the back
  • Failed gearbox in VW Golf 8 Feb 2006 (Forum)
A few weeks ago, the diff failed in the gearbox of our 3 year old VW Golf (an import) which caused a hole in the gearbox casing - we were left with a huge bill for a new gearbox and a new clutch - we're currently corresponding with VW, but so far no joy, but we'll keep battling on. The car had

Problem bein car starts first time, then every couple of weeks will cut out when driving for no apparent reason. it turns over as normal cuts out on start. • Peugeot 306 1.9 Diesel Turbo - Catalytic 18 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Mates car has a broken Cat matrix. On my 406 2.1TD a couple of years ago, same happened to me (After 180,000m) The garage just rodded out the old cat, leaving an empty chamber. No real problems but was slightly more bassy noise. At the time (late 2003), Cat not required for MOT as test

  • Cheap turbocharger (any make) 9 May 2005 (Forum)
one off an old car, until I've got it off will have no idea of it's condition. Is there anywhere that takes turbos that while in good condition have no use and would be willing to flog one on cheap to me?
  • room with a view 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Just spent a few days in Spain, much of it being driven in roomy 20 year old Peugeot 206 (still going strong), and one thing that struck me was the fabulous all round vision - thanks to deep windows. Today's designs involve ever higher "waistlines" and, particularly for young passengers, less
  • Cambelt Question 22 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I'm wondering whether to get the cambelt changed on my passat. I was looking through some old receipts for the car (not long before I bought it), and saw one listing the following: Tension Roller V Belt - £75.00 Drive Belt - 4 pK 850 - £5.00 Timing Belt - £17.00 Labour
  • Peug 309D many miles 15 Nov 2004 (Forum)
My car has done 165000 miles I haven't had it from new but have the old receipts. I acquired it at 98000 miles. Beside the things that come up on MOT I was just wondering what could start packing up soon. I've only had to replace the alternator, water pump, radiator and drive shafts. I don't think
  • Ford key question 23 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I have a mk3 fiesta. No leccy windows, power steering, central locking or immobiliser. Today my key decides that it's too worn to work anymore, so I use the red one instead for now. Now as the old key is more or less redundant, I thought I'd take it apart. I found a little glass tube
  • Who's got the hump then? 10 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I am amused by an indignant letter in today's Bahrain Gulf Daily News which claims the Moroccan Embassy has installed two humps without authority outside it so that the Ambassador's car can get out more easily. This is followed by an equally indignant response from the Roads and Traffic

  • Which new Primera? 6 May 2004 (Forum)
My dad has been offered a good deal to upgrade his two year old Primera to a brand new one. His current car is the 2.0 petrol, but he now has a choice between the 1.8 petrol and 2.2 diesel. The published figures and HJ's roadtest imply the diesel is the one to pick, and I suspect it might suit
  • What, no snow circus this winter? 16 Jan 2004 (Forum)
, no basis for Schadenfreude , just good entertaining stuff. I wonder if lessons were learned? The lesson I learned (yep, the 'old blowoff' allegation is true): I left my car in the garage. Oz (as was)
  • Focus - rear wheel bearings ? 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Wife's Focus, 3 yrs old, 26K miles has started making a whining noise from the rear end. This rises and decreases in volume with road wheel speed. I've checked under car for trapped debris / loose lines etc. to no avail. I've come to the conclusion it's likely to be one / both rear wheel bearings
