  • Effect of having insurance cancelled 15 Mar 2003 (Forum)
What Mark (RLBS) says about having difficulty in this situation is certainly true. It is unfortunate as the cancellation wasn't her fault. A popular scam with young people is to only put themselves as named drivers. My sister rightly didn't want to do this and has always had her own policy. Another scam is to put a low-risk parents address when keeping the car in a high-risk area.
  • Hideous Insurance Renewal problem 7 Nov 2008 (Forum)
and would not listen to my argument that this was not actually choice since the first was based on an erroneous belief that au pairs are employees which drove the premium to an unrealistic rate or the second where I get the money back but will face hideous problems on renewal of trying to insure a young driver with a record of insurance refused. I have spoken to the insurer?s customer complaints department who tell me that they have voided the original policy and they are investigating. I have asked them to make it clear to me that they have taken this decision of their own volition.
  • Road rage - moi? 8 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I was reminiscing with a friend over the old Aussie Shiraz, as you do, and began telling her of the time that one of my then young teen-age daughters had to appear in court. My husband, myself and our two youngest daughters (both young teen-agers) were living in Arcadia in Los Angeles 20-some years ago at the time. One evening we attended a football match (boring, boring, boring) between their school Arcadia High and Pasadena High.
  • Pensioner Leads Police On 27 Mile Chase At 10mph 9 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Rafael Pigott mitigating, said: "Police erred on the side of caution because of an elderly driver knocking over a young girl in the town centre recently." Barry Wheatcroft, chairman of the bench, disqualified Turner from driving for 12 months, fined £100 and ordered to pay £100 costs.
  • Positive (only) aspects of UK motoring 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I regularly see a Gent I knew around 10yrs ago. At that time he was driving a Landcruiser and was fit, young looking - and a decade younger than me. Now, I see him moving along the outer ring road, heading in towards the City - he`s wearing an all enveloping cape that covers him from the neck down - and the working parts of his powered wheelchair - just leaving the wheels exposed.
  • Byers questions Final part (hopefully) 2 May 2002 (Forum)
Education There is considerable concern among the electorate that the Government favours a policy of legislation and punishment for drivers, and benefits from the income fines from initiatives like speed cameras provide. This approach appears to ignore the benefits of driver education to improve standards, which would have much greater and lasting benefits.
  • Red Traffic Light Camera Offence 29 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Unfortunately, a few months ago, my young Niece was caught by a Red Traffic Light Camera going through a red light. Apparently the time of the photograph is six seconds after the lights turned to Red. She is 20 years old. I myself just expected nothing to happen, if, hopefully, the camera didn't have any film left, or she would receive the usual NIP with the offer of a fixed penalty 3 points plus a 3 point licence endorsement.
  • And todays lesson in road safety... 13 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I estimate the oncoming car that Tboned him (mk3 Golf) was doing around 30mph or less as it had just rounded a tight bend. The driver of the car who crashed was a young lad, late teens or possibly early 20s. He wasn't wearing his seatbelt either. He extracted himself from the car (passenger side) within a few minutes and was able to walk about fine etc-he really did walk away, unless he had internal injuries.
  • Turning slowly into side streets 18 Oct 2009 (Forum)
The cars are also parked very close to the junction blocking the view until you are well into the junction, and cars absolutely belt down the road (loads of young lads in cars doing well over the limit). Now, the cars behind me *should* be leaving room for them to stop safely if they can't get past me, but the reality is that they drive close and fast. My thoughts are that I need to be that slow to be able to turn into the side street without crossing the middle line and to check that the street is clear.
  • Have I got a chance? 26 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Just as I went to turn right, I was hit by the car whose lane I was stationary in. The young girl who hit me was quite hysterical and didn't say anything once I'd made sure she was okay. The police turned up about 5 mins later. They said they could see what had happened but they would have to put down in their report that I was at fault because I was blocking the oncoming vehicle's lane.
  • letter from the colonies vol 14 18 Aug 2006 (Forum)
At the gate a vendor sells little plastic wallets for your licence. A red one for truck, bus and taxi drivers marked "Professional Driver" and a green one for the hoi-polloi marked "Unprofessional Driver". I buy William a green one; he is not amused. The next stage of all this is the practical test. This is administered only when a licensed instructor says the pupil is ready and has had sufficient lessons to reach the necessary level of skill.
  • Protection from rear impacts 13 Sep 2007 (Forum)
s head must be practically brushing the rear screen. I was reminded of that traffic-cops type TV programme on several months back where a young woman (the driver) had tragically been killed when her car (was it a Peugeot 206?) became sandwiched between a truck and an Audi estate. The truck was big-ish but not an HGV, and it turned out its driver had been fiddling with a cellphone, and realised so little of events that he thought he?
  • Ask Byers Part 2 28 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Whole heap of stuff on education which distils down to strong feelings that Despite the current driving test being harder than ever before, judging by the accident rates in young drivers, it is still not enough and does not tackle the problem of drivers who have not passed a test in many years. Furthermore there is almost no education provision for other road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
  • The best first wheels 23 Jan 2021 (Forum)
People seem terrified of older cars, believing them to be unreliable and unsafe but I argue that they’re not and to land young drivers with a crippling monthly bill is unwise and only delays the day they can stand on their own two feet with head held high. They’ll be with you in their 40’s if they get into the PCP/Lease trap of a costly new car every few years.
  • Driving in Kuwait 25 Aug 2006 (Forum)
They drive the smaller, lighter, older vehicles that make up such weird wrecked sculptures. Taxi-drivers, overwhelmingly immigrants, are not generally permitted any vehicle larger than a modest saloon. My taxi-driver, Amir, is a Bangladeshi who overworks because he's smart enough to realise that if he ever wants to see his kids' faces before they hit their teens then he's got to put money aside.
  • Citroen C4 VTRI + Coupe - CITROEN C4 BSI UNIT BURNT OUT !!!!! 5 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The Guy informed me that the fault wasn’t down to Driver error and that he was going to advise the car be taking into Citroen and stripped to check why this unit had gone on fire. Citroen took the car into a local dealer. After 24 hours I called and was told they were not going to look into the car as the unit has been disturbed?
  • Ford Focus - Faulty Car (Small Claims Court or Not) 21 Aug 2018 (Forum)
I informed the man of this issue and he said he won’t be giving me anymore money because I bought the car cheap (£525) he knew it was for a first time driver my partner and my young infant daughter under 1 years. He told me he was a trader and the car was faultless and he wouldn’t sell a car with any issues, I asked him this in writing a few times and he told me he wouldn’t make me drive 35 miles to a car with issues.
  • BMW 528 Tourer - Dealer sold car with Speedo not working nd many ot 25 May 2013 (Forum)
He was very annoyed and told me not to come back, but I was relieved as I was in such a rush to drive 120 miles back home to pick up my young son. (Sorry this is a long message) On driving home, I noticed that the speedo was not working and was concerned about this, but knowing that the dealership was shut continued home to pick up my son.
  • Risks buying certain 3yr old cars 24 May 2007 (Forum)
There are two models in a manufacturers range, discussed in another marque specific forum. One is typically bought by pensioners or young female drivers. It has few problems and seems a reasonable bet at 3 years old. The other model seems to have taken over the role of the old modded Novas or Corsa`s of a decade or so ago however Its not a Vauxhall.
  • Why DO we have to have such wide tyres these days? 19 Feb 2013 (Forum)
(or is it merely that when grip IS lost, the car would have been going at a higher speed? In which case why not legislate that young drivers can only drive special speed-restricted Smart ForTwos: Skinny front tyres, and a maximum of 1 innocent passenger that can potentially be injured/killed... but I digress..)     I thought that for a given corner weight and tyre pressure, the AREA of the contact patch remained constant as a tyre got wider - it just changed shape (?)
