Pensioner led police on 27 mile chase at 10mph

A pensioner who led police on a 27 mile low-speed chase at 10mph finally stopped after an officer tapped on her window while running alongside the car.

Caroline Turner, 76, ignored blue flashing lights, but eventually stopped when an officer ran alongside her on a dual carriageway and tapped on her window.

He asked her to stop and she said: "Why, what have I done?" a court heard.

The officer explained that her driving was unacceptable. She replied: "There is nothing to discuss, I'm going home."

She was detained in a police cell overnight on Tuesday (4 October) because officers feared her driving could lead to a fatal accident.

Turner sparked the major police operation after she drove the wrong way round a roundabout in Thorpe, Essex.

She veered onto the opposite side of the road into oncoming vehicles, then refused to stop as cops pursued her along the A12.

She was followed by an unmarked police car from Thorpe to Weeley to the A120 and on to the A12.

Her speed varied from 10mph to 20mph on the 27-mile "chase".

An officer left his vehicle, ran alongside her Ford Fiesta, tapped on the window and asked her to pull over after Turner ignored emergency flashing lights.

Police formed a rolling road block and closed the A12 when she refused to pull over. She was eventually pulled over at Marks Tey - eight miles after entering the dual carriageway.

Turner, of Gidea Park, Romford, Essex, admitted driving without due care and attention and failing to stop when asked by police when she appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court.

Rafael Pigott mitigating, said: "Police erred on the side of caution because of an elderly driver knocking over a young girl in the town centre recently."

Barry Wheatcroft, chairman of the bench, disqualified Turner from driving for 12 months, fined £100 and ordered to pay £100 costs.

Mr Wheatcroft said: "The safety of the public is paramount and your driving yesterday was a demonstration of driving which was careless bordering on dangerous."

Pensioner Leads Police On 27 Mile Chase At 10mph - Farm Hand

Good evening Jamie,

Didnt read any article on this so dont know all the details but she was invited onto the Jeremy Vine Radio 2 show today FRI-07-OCT-11 to explain her side of the story. And what a laugh!

She did acknowledge that she had made the mistake of going around the roundabout the wrong way and did indeed refuse to pull over for uniformed police officers.

She came across as extremely angry at how she had been treated by the police - and then had a go at Jeremy - on air - "LET ME SPEAK"! She said angrily over him. Jeremy being the consumate professional he is, let her rant on and let her attitude speak for itself so the listener could make their own judgement. At one point she said something like " I didnt stop for the police because I didnt give them the authority to do so!!!!

If you listened to the interview it is clear she has a big attitude problem with authority (and well every body really) and should probably give up driving.

Try and get a listen to the interview. IMO she is totally headstrong and the wrong temperament to be allowed on our roads.

But Brake would say she's perfectly safe because she wasnt exceeding the speed limit.

Its clear she has no chance of passing an extended driving test to regain her driving licence, she probably wont bother with the retest and spend her last years complaining about how those nasty horrible police pulled her over when they should be out there catching murderers etc

I will try and catch the interview on the BBC iPlayer which has Jeremy Vine's show, sounds like a good laugh!

At one point she said something like " I didnt stop for the police because I didnt give them the authority to do so!!!!

Im sorry M'Lady do you mind awfully giving me permission to pull you over?

Frightening thing is - thats the one the police caught. (Err excuse me - it was 27 miles) But in fairness to the police, they obviously didnt use excessive force, and blues and twos must have been enough warning for the rest of us.

How many more out there?

And they say its the younger drivers with the worst attitude?

I once saw a very old lady driving the wrong way round a roundabout in Lancaster. She was driving in the hatchmarks, and the 3 passengers she had with her looked utterly terrified.

Back in the time when the A64/A1 junction near Bramham was a crossroads, I was a passenger in a car driven by an elderly lady, she failed to stop at the "Major Road Ahead" sign and would have been T-boned by a truck if the driver had not had fast reactions and good brakes: my offer to take over for the rest of the journey was, thankfully, accepted.
