  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 97 1.1 MOT costs - what should I expect?! 23 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Hi, I'm taking our car for an MOT soon and as I know NOTHING about cars I know I am going to get ripped off. Our foot brakes are really bad at the moment, the hand brake doesnt work well (unless you really wrench the thing up it rolls backwards) and we have a big crack in our front window screen
  • Nissan Sunny (1991 - 1995) - 94 1.4 Stalling when engine warm 9 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I have just bought an M reg Nissan Sunny which, once warm, stalls when braking and changing down the gears. The revs drop off when the clutch is dropped, the throttle off and the brake applied, and the car stalls as it comes to a stand still. Otherwise drives well, and also always starts

  • BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 523i Automatic - Gear stick stuck in Park. 9 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Please help! I took the dash clocks out to change the bulb yesterday and put it back, when I put it back, the car starts ok and all fine but the gearstick won't come out of park. I thought it was to do with the brake pedal sensor but when I press the brake pedal I can still hear a little clicking

  • New towcar - Hyundai or Kia 31 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Sorento was last year's towcar of the year and is still a class winner but I'm attracted to the Santa Fe, it's £1k cheaper and the 5 year warranty is good news. I'm not put off by the foot activated parking brake either as I've had Citroen XMs in the past. HJ's car-by-car breakdown is helpful
  • warning lights: crying wolf? 2 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Hi all, My GF's 2000V BMW 318Ci flashed warning lights a couple of days ago (ABS, TC and brake- manual says be cautious, but can keep driving). GF worried- books into local indy for a check tomorrow (sat). Check fluid- all ok. Lights have not re-appeared. Do we go for the check, or can this be put
  • P-reg Mondeo 1.8 16v 23 May 2004 (Forum)
little querie for any ABS whizz-kids . I changed the brake fluid today , in the normal way - pipe in jar , pump pedal, top-up fluid etc etc Pedal fine , however on starting engine abs light and brake warning light stayed on longer than before. They go out together , when car driven off , and stay off

  • Golf IV service - idiot questions 14 Oct 2003 (Forum)
if there is anything I should ask to be looked at specifically: - Brakes: The brakes are making a rubbing noise recently. Are the pads up for a change? Or the discs? - Are there any other major shocks I should expect - e.g. timing belt change. Thanks for reading, DF
  • Fiesta 1.25 coolant return pipe 31 Aug 2003 (Forum)
well it felt like it was breaking up. Are the ford hoses cheap carp or are they off pritty good quality? Is there a known problem with this pipe braking after five years? Has anyone ever changed one? If you have is it a pain to do? Last one now, should this pipe be braking up like it is. I don\'t plan
  • MOT Questions 4 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I have just learned that my Primera has failed its MOT for 2 reasons. Firstly, one of the front tyres has a cut. They were replaced about 1 year/10k miles ago. Can anyone tell me how deep/wide a cut has to be before it is an MOT failure? Secondly, I was told that one of the brake lines
  • Peugeot 205 cuts out when cold 22 Apr 2003 (Forum)
SWMBO's Peugeot 205 XL, 1124 cc (H reg) fires up instantly in all weathers but always needs the choke for a few miles. Choke or not, when cold it has a frustrating habit of instantly dying stone dead when downing the clutch and braking for whatever reason. At first I was (chauvinistically
  • More local fun 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)
This is what we have to endure... From the Johannesburg Sunday Times: A bus with bald tyres, no brakes, no licence disc, a twisted chassis and a pick-up's numberplates passed through a traffic control centre and several roving roadblocks on a 1 150km trip across South Africa. It dodged numerous
  • LED Lighting eg Range Rover 5 Oct 2002 (Forum)
lights I noticed, great. One thing I didn't like though was that the amber indicator LED's appeared to be in a single layer ring around the brake lights. Fine when just indicators on, but when braking and indicating not quite so visible. Anyone else noticed this effect or was it just me?
  • Being overtaken - responsibilities? 3 Oct 2002 (Forum)
, and realising that he was not going to get past, I had been in two minds as between braking to let him get past, or maintaining my speed so that he could slip in behind. If I had braked, he would have gone straight into the lorry. As it happened, I made the right decision, ie to do nothing, but either way
  • changing gears 25 Oct 2001 (Forum)
through the gears since i find it gives better control over braking, but can this put adverse stress on the 'box too? Am I better off using just the brakes? My driving instructor taught me to not go through the gears - but he said that in days of old they did used to teach students to go through

Pebble dash. I live at the end of a non-asphalted road and at least once a year have the same problem with a small stone lodging between the brake disc and back plate. I have found that by driving the car a short distance in reverse the stone is sometimes thrown out.
