Overall reliability

The Passat is comfortable and pleasant to drive, one of the best family saloon cars available.

Due to unjustified anti-diesel sentiment my Passat was purchased in as-new condition at 5'000 miles and 12 months old from a VW dealer at a very fair price.
Positives attributes include space for four tall adults, and a large regularly shaped boot. Stress-free driving thanks to adaptive cruse control, slick 7-speed auto gearbox, & auto parking brake. Bright LED headlights are a boon on dark country roads, and thoughtful design include a dipping left door mirror when reverse is selected, overhead sun-glass storage, and a bootlid which springs open when released from a switch on the driver's door or the remote control, also universal opening & closing of the windows from the remote, plus parking sensors front & rear. Good build quality, finish, handling, ride & steering, plus clear instruments and logical controls. Excellent long journey economy, I've achieved 65 mpg on a number of occasions, the best of any car I've owned, and the 66 litre fuel tank implies that up to 900 miles between fills is achievable.

There are a few negatives and these include high urban fuel consumption, backseats which do not fold down low enough thereby limiting the size of the pass-through from the boot, no auto-dim headlights, and a smallish glove box. The absence of a reversing camera combined somewhat petite door mirrors mean the Passat is not the easiest car to accurately position in a parking space.

To sum-up, having reviewed all large family car options available including electric, hybrid, petrol and diesel I bought the Passat, I believe its the best choice available.
