Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005)
VW Passat 1.8T
Smooth motorised sofa
I have had this car for 2 and a half years and preferring petrol and finding the diesels too dear, went for this model. Personally I find the smooth 1.8t engine suits the Passat better than the TDI PD units, which IMO are too on and off in their delivery. This is a wonderfully comfortable car with squishy seats and a soft ride on modest 15 inch wheels. I have yet to try a modern car which is as comfortable on urban roads. That includes my father in laws new Jag XF diesel. On the downside, the steering is very vague and the handling a wee bit wallowy. Obviously its not that economical but can do 40 MPG on a steady run. Using the gears gives good performance and its easily a match for something like a 320d, although Id prefer a bit more torque in top on occasions. I have suffered a few niggling electrical issues such as the coolant temp sensor going, the dreaded low oil pressure light coming on (a fault with this engine) and thermostat going. However, in general it has been a trusty and very sturdy family car. It feels built like a tank and the doors shut with a thud, easily the equal of the latest E Class Merc. If you want a no nonsense comfortable car and dont want something sporty, or a diesel, take a look at one of these. From what I understand they are less trouble than the newer shape B6 diesels!
