Great car though MPG not as good as expected

Bought this car to replace electrically unreliable C class Merc. The Golf was pre-registered and showed 70 miles. Cost represented a discount of over 30% on new. Golf is very comfortable and roomy, easy to access due to high driving position. DSG "wet clutch box is excellent and I hope will be more reliable than an earlier 7 speed we had in a Golf. Panoramic sunroof is a tremendous though costly option. The ride, on 18 inch Serron option wheels is a bit choppy. Speed sensitive cruise control works very well. The stop-start mechanism seems to have a mind of its own (previous Merc was the same when it worked at all). The biggest disappointment is fuel consumption. Whereas previous VW group diesels we have owned we're very good, especially the PD engines of a few years ago, this seems to struggle to better 45mpg, and, even using stop-start, struggles to beat our four wheel drive DSG Yeti.
