Toyota iQ (2008 - 2014)
3 1.33 VVT-I 68 3dr Hatchback
Cheap to run, sluggish, reliable, good in the dry but scary in the wet.
I've never spent so little on running a car. I drive approx. 16k miles per year so the 58-60mpg I get is great, low cost servicing, insurance & tax are all a bonus. Only slightly daft costs are the tyres - with 16" wheels and a strange size tyre costing over £100 each being a nasty blow on a small car. These expensive narrow tyres bring their own problems. I've never had ABS before and never needed it but this car so does as at the first sign of moisture rock hard low resistance tyres tyres loose all grip. Brakes are good (disks all round) but the tyres can't cope. Engine works well and is quiet, refined and very economical. Drives very well and has decent amount of 'go', but at times you will need to drop down 3 gears when you hit a hill. Seats are comfortable in the front. Visibility is limited by wide b pillars, but huge wing mirrors help. Other drivers can't help but cut you up and generally bully you. I never suffered this one in decade with Saab or decade with MGZR but in this car it happens on a daily basis. Some sort of subconscious 'kick sand in the face of the little guy' seems to happen. If (unlike me) you stick to town and city driving all should be ok (except your mpg will shrink to about 45).
