SEAT Leon (2005 - 2013)
2.0 TDI Stylance 5dr Hatchback
Great driver's car - performance with economy
The second Leon 2.0TDi that I have owned [previous one was an 08 plate], so I must have been happy with the first car to have chosen another. I went for the SE spec rather than FR as I didn't want rock hard suspension, more expensive insurance [mine is well under £200], tyre costs* etc. The Leon seems to be the perfect compromise car as it is a better drive than the equivalent Golf, has firm but comfortable seats, holds the road brilliantly and has more than enough grunt and torque from the big diesel engine. Previous to the Leons I ran a 1.9TDi Skoda Fabia which was more economical [60mpg easily achieved], but deadly dull and handled more like a small barge. The Leon generally returns around 52mpg locally and nearer 55mpg on long runs such as the 180 mile trip up to Glasgow. The most appealing feature of the 2.0 diesel is the amount of torque on hand, giving instant response in almost any gear and making the overtaking of articulated trucks a breeze, whilst even local 1 in 5 gradient hills are easily conquered in 4th gear. What's not to like? Well, I suppose the driver's vision is slightly compromised by the 'A' pillars, but it's something you soon get used to, whilst the rear seats don't really fold completely flat making the transport of bulky items a bit difficult. There have been criticisms of the rear hatch door being on the small side, but to me it is about right as it can be safely opened in the garage without fouling the garage door. The only problem I've had has been a failed latch on the rear hatch, which conveniently occurred a month before the 3 year warranty expired. Before buying the 2.0 diesel I was given warnings about DPF problems and expensive repairs, but both Leons have been completely fault free mechanically, and I would have no hesitation in purchasing another with the same engine.
* tyres...... fronts replaces after 28k miles, rears now on 36k and will need replacing within the next 5k at a cost of iro £80 each. Maybe there is a new shape Leon on my wish list?
