Peugeot 407 Coupe (2006 - 2011)
2.7 hdi coupe GT
Sleek looker but has expensive surprises
Expensive when new but due to depreciation appears to be a real bargain. They look good in the photographs and better in the flesh. The first models such as this one come with all the whistles and bells. Extremely comfortable to sit in and it has the feel of a quality car.
A real pleasure to drive but it is a Grand Tourer and not for zipping around town. It is long and low which can be a nuisance to park. The doors are heavy and very long so you need room between you and the next car in the multi storey car park. Sensors are a must as it is difficult to judge the distances and the colour screen tells you when you are getting close and which corner is the one getting close.
The JBL audio system is good which is helped by what is a very quiet car. The 6CD changer in the boot is supplemened by an audio/video input in the rather small glovebox. In changing the steering wheel over to the right hand side they did not bother to also move the fuse box. Lots of buttons and a complicated system can cause confusion and takes time to become familiar with. The sat nav is expensive to update and it is cheaper to use a Garmin/Tom Tom window sucker mounted type. Older editions have a SIM card slot in the audio system, newer ones the better bluetooth and it is not a case of simply replacing an older unit with the newer head unit.
When buying a used auto version be aware that the 6 speed auto box as also fitted to some Saab's, Range Rovers, Vauxhalls and Jags has a history of going through valve blocks at between 60 to 70 thousand miles which will cost you over a thousand pounds to put right. It is also in an expensive tax band for the 2.7 twin turbo diesel and insurance can be expensive for the unaware.
The boot is surprisingly large and it is reassuring to find a full size spare hiding away under the mat. Rear seats are not bad for a coupe but not for tall people.
Overall it is a lot of car for the money but has a lot of technology in it and can be expensive to repair. A pleasure to drive on long distances and offers reasonable consumption for the size of engine. Best check on the nearest Peugeot specialist if you are on a budget and do check the history particularly in regard to the gearbox. Owners forums are very useful and well worth checking out.
