MINI Clubman (2016 - 2024)
1.5 Auto
Bigger mini that gives more practicality but compromises performance
I chose a clubman because I needed the space. However the downside of this is that this is no longer a sprightly small car but instead has become noticeably heavier and wider than other minis that I have driven so if you don't need the space I would recommend a 3 door hatch instead. If you do need the space then consider stretching to a bigger engine so that the straight line performance matches the "go cart handling" that the salesmen seem to love to bang on about. Exhaust note responsiveness of handling seems a bit lame too compared to my old 3 door hatch. It's pleasant to drive but somehow I don't feel as connected to the driving experience.
This is the newest car that I've owned by quite a few years so don't know if it's just a common problem with new cars in general but compared to my previous cars, the doors are very thick which makes it difficult to get in and out of in tight parking spaces.
I chose automatic gearbox. Whilst undoubtably better for city driving, I think next time I would buy a manual instead due to the price difference and put the money saved towards a bigger engine. Striking a right balance between what you want and what is a reasonable overall price is a challenge. Frustratingly some options are grouped together in expensive "packs" or only available if you go for a higher trim level so it can work out expensive to get the options that you want, however if you skimp on options you will probably regret it later. I regretted that I didn't get the nice leather seats and given that I had gone for an auto, I also I wished that I had opted for the paddle change option for the gearbox and the heads up display.
I would definitely recommend a clubman, but be aware that if you are looking for a fun car to drive, the much heavier clubman needs enough power to overcome the weight penalty.
