Enjoyable, but?

I have owned this car from new since Feb 2010 and I have done around 3500 miles. I struggle to get any more than 36 litres in the tank and as a result my fuel efficiency is not that good. I am lucky to see 300 miles from what my gauge says a full tank. I am conscious of making sure the air con does remains off, and to ensure the boot is empty. I feel that I am a fairly decent driver so I am frustrated at the cars performance. It is due to go in for a check for what I perceive as a problem but I do not hold out much hope with what I have been advised so far (e.g. drive like miss daisy 60mph on the motorway etc). Has anyone else had the same type of issues? As I was hoping to enjoy 54mpg... Just to add I had to hand the car back as the alarm system was faulty it took the dealership approx 5 months to rectify this and it was only done after I contacted them to ask had they found the fault yet....
