Lexus RX400h (2005 - 2009)
Limited Edition Executive
Smooth, Quiet and Comfortable
I wanted a Hybrid with a high driving position so I could travel comfortably in quietude and have a smile - rather than a grimace - on my face when I step out at the end of long trips. Looks were also important, of course, and while the 450h was available at the time I was looking, its styling was a retrograde step in my eyes: this and the switch from a touchscreen control panel to a US Market-inspired left-hand (!) controller on the new model weighted heavily against it (and, although a minor point perhaps, the tape player had gone too !). I still haven't seen - or been in - a better SUV and find the 400h does everything I want it to do and does it well: while it's got as much acceleration as you need off the race track I particularly enjoy the way it wafts me around silently at the slow to moderate pace I prefer to drive at. OAbout the only extra I wish it had is auto-folding/opening wing mirrors: as it is, the button for the mirrors isn't illuminated so is difficult to find at night.
