Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006 - 2015)
2,2 GS e 4wd manual
Well worth a road test. This is a great vehicle.
For a few years as a "lad" I repaired land-rovers and owned some early editions to include a series one and a LWB safari (in the middle east) and to be frank due to reliability problems I would never have been without a job, so all these years later here I am with a very posh version of a mud plugger and is it worth having? The answer is yes.
I have had one issue in 6 months of ownership, the vehicle went into limp mode twice. My diagnosis as a trained old style mechanic is I suffered a dealer feck up. After delivery I asked for a LR tow bar to be fitted. I have fitted tow bars to several of my cars myself to include electrics but all pre computer so I played safe letting the dealer do the job and after the fitment the vehicle soon failed. I returned it to the dealer as unfit for purpose and said if thrice it should happen I would demand and expect a full refund. The written warning seems to have done the trick as no more gremlins. This vehicle is quieter and quicker 0 to 60 than my wife's 59 plate 2lt BMW E93 and the economy is very acceptable for a 4WD. Rear boot space is restricted compared to some utility vehicles and the fact you have to specify a spare wheel (and pay extra) is a negative.
Servicing at a dealer looks to be expensive, the first service is only a minimal check plus oil change and having worked in the trade I know how little time is required to do this so I may use my rights under European Legislation to have it serviced by a VAT registered reputable local garage (using LR Filters etc) and retain the warranty.
This is a very different vehicle to early Freelanders and Defenders, the 2.2 unit is responsive, the cab is relaxing. Shame the company is no longer British as it is good enough to drive through an Empire where once the sun never set.
