Land Rover Defender (1984 - 2016)
Land Rover 90 2.5TD
A Saggy Old Cloth Cat.....but I loved it
Yes it was noisy, crude, outdated, cold in winter, slow with a bouncy ride and I had little room to put my right arm and the clutch was heavy but I loved it nonetheless. For towing 2 horses in an Ifor Williams trailer it was unbeatable and on the rough unsurfaced roads on which I took it to get me closer to the mountains it was unstoppable. I used the low-ratio gears for towing across wet fields and up mountain tracks on its own and found them a godsend.
Average MPG from the indirect injection engine not towing was 28mpg with 30mpg on occasion on a long run. Towing it dropped to 21mpg average. I had it 18 months and the only thing I had to replace was the rear door which broke due to the weight of the spare wheel. It was reliable and service parts and tyres were cheap. I loved it and it made journeys fun.
The engines have improved markedly since this model as has the interior but there's something about the plastic wipe-down seats that I miss!
