Land Rover Defender (1984 - 2016)
Defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon
For serious towing this is the car to have.
Yes it is noisy, draughty and cold in winter, but if you want to tow a horse box this is a tool that will do the job over fields, on roads and up and down tracks. The TD5 engine has great torque, plus the gears are ideal for towing with 5th (top) just right for 50-60mph on dual carriageways.
I've never had to use low ratio on the road, but means you can get in and out of those steep farm entrances with the trailer & is also useful to give a nice low reverse gear for trailer parking.
While it has lots of faults from the comfort viewpoint, somehow it is great fun to drive (bit like a grown-up tonka toy). The Discovery is much more civilised but also has much more to go wrong & is more expensive to insure.
The 90 is limited for space in the back, but easier to manoeuvre with the shorter wheelbase. Seems to tow a heavy horse trailer (Richardson with max weight 2700kg) without any problems.
