Practical family car but experienced expensive Powershift issues

This is a great family car, loads of space for three car seats in the middle row and all the family gear in the boot. The auto box and torquey engine makes for easy driving with the family on board, but without them it can be surprisingly sprinted.

It’s just hit 6 years old and 60k miles and the Powershift gearbox failed. It started with hesitant gear changes, then I got Limited Transmission Function message and then, when taking it to dealer to get looked at, I lost all drive and Transmission Malfunction message. Dealer quoted £5,400 for a new gearbox, ended up with a reconditioned one from an independent gearbox specialist in Liverpool for £3,000. Specialist had seen 6 S-Max’s and Galaxy’s the week alone with gearbox failure and he said I was lucky to get 60k from it, so be warned, this is a common problem and an expensive fix. Ultimately, we decided to repair and keep the car as it works so well for our family, however it will be traded in a few years before it needs another gearbox!
