Great little bargain but don’t buy in red

Covered 50k fairly trouble-free miles in this, having paid less than half of what the equivalent-spec’s Golf would have cost. Not everyone loves the VTi engine, but I averaged 43mpg and never had any engine issues, other than it using a lot of oil from around 60k onwards. The suspension isn’t set up for today’s roads in the UK, so check if the front ball/bushels have been replaced. The red paint is truly shocking in terms of being prone to chips and lacquer peel so avoid that. The VTi isn’t turbocharged, so at low speeds the car feels a bit sluggish unless you really rev it. In the real world this was only really noticeable when leaving roundabouts onto faster roads. Other than that, the car drives well, the brakes are impressive, comfy seats, Selection trim includes DAB and a panoramic sunroof, and the VTi engine is quick enough once you’re up to speed. Plenty of space too. Overall a good car if you don’t have a ton of money to spend.
