BMW Z4 (2003 - 2009)
3.0si SE Open Car
Bumpy, twitchy - but great fun
My 35th car but the first proper RWD sports car i've ever owned as i've always needed more seats until now. Completely impractical for rural Devon in the winter. I love it.
The performance is great, I love the looks, everything works and it was a steal considering the performance and specification. Being the 3.0 SE it does have the M Sport suspension though which on staggered 18's and rural potholed roads means it's insanely bumpy and twitchy. In fact when wet I end up driving slower than everyone else on the lanes holding everyone up. When it's dry though hit the sport button and it's incredibly good fun.
I'm averaging a real 28MPG, 29.5 on super unleaded. In my first 3k tyre wear looks to be ok and nothing (touch wood) has gone wrong so far.
There are lots of other options out there, 350Z, Boxster but with an unburstable great sounding engine, reasonable specification and pretty good performance I cant think of a safer bet for a cheap roadster.
In all honesty though dont buy one as your main car if you live in the back of beyond. I'm either going to have to find 1.5k for winter wheels/tyres or buy a cheapo FWD daily driver. Or end up in a ditch.
