BMW 5 Series (2003 - 2010)
545i automatic
Pretty well perfect
I have done only 21000 in this car as I bought it when I retired. It still feels new and is perfect for sitting in traffic in the extremely comfortable electric leather sports seats and pottering along at 50-60 with the traffic although the car feels happiest and gives best fuel consumption at 80.
I have only had 4 problems with the car :-
1. The spline on the steering column developed a click and a tiny amount of free play which resulted in a battle with the dealer. This was a known problem with the car up till March 2004 when BMW produced a modified spline (the lubricant dried out on the old one). Finally they fitted the updated one.
2. The 20" Schnitzer's leak slowly and require fortnightly top ups despite new valves. Having said that, the car rides well on them and the grip is fantastic. The car has sports suspension.
3. The cigar lighter jams but as I only use it to inflate the tyres I have simply removed the actual lighter.
4. A cupholder broke.
My dilemma is now whether to keep the car till it dies or buy a green pedal car and simply use my wife's X1 M Sport for longer runs. Every time I consider this my heart says No.
