BMW 5 Series (2003 - 2010)
520i SE 4dr
Iconic shape, with standard setting mechanical's.
Iv'e owned this vehicle for over a year now, and i pleased to report that it has been faultless. The build quality is generally good, and components feel built to last. The car does feel a little tired now though, with so-so performance from the 2.2 litre engine hauling 1570kg of weight around. The car is responsive above 70mph or so, however it's still sluggish when pulling away at lower speeds- obviously tuned for the German autobahns. Iv'e considered variable options to boost performance in the engine, such as chip/remap tuning, but for the cash, the performance gains are limited unless your car is a turbo model. The engines lack of torque is to blame for these characteristics, so you have to work the 5-speed manual box to keep up the momentum. I should also mention that higher octane fuels make a noticeable difference, i recommend shell V-power and Tesco momentum for the highest RON 99.
If I was to recommend a 5-series, it would be the 530d auto, because the characteristics of a diesel engine are far better suited to our road conditions. With the 530d a remap would be beneficial and boost the performance to that of the 530i but keeping the lower running costs.
The 5 series has a superb ride quality, especially on the muscular 16" SE alloys, a true luxury car experience, however mine has cloth seats- which feel hard, so opt' for the leather upholstery if your looking to buy one.
Overall, the car has served me well and i might keep for a bit yet- next car will be a 07-09 Jag XJR ;).
