BMW 3 Series Touring (2012 - 2019)
320i 2.0 M Sport Auto 5dr
A great all-rounder but troublesome engine
Really enjoy the car, it's a brilliant drive and all-rounder. It has the BMW N20 engine and 2013/2014 were the first years for this engine.
At 45,000 miles we had an issue with the car smoking on start up. Some searching online showed this up as being a common problem reported in the US (because there are more petrol engined cars out there?).
Despite the car being out of warranty BMW fixed the issue as a good-will gesture by replacing one of the oil feed pipes with a revised version that includes a check valve.
At around 45,000 miles a high pitched worn chain/sprocket noise started. It got progressively worse and at 55,000 miles our main dealer identified it as a worn oil pump drive sprocket. In the US BMW extended the warranty for these early engines to 7 years or 70k miles due to known issues. BMW UK declined to good-will any of the repair and I got the work done at a BMW independent for just under £1200
Despite the engine issues I still really like the car. The looks are starting to date a bit but the build quality is otherwise great and it still drives really well.
