Audi A6 Avant (2005 - 2011)
2.0 TDI multitronic 5dr Auto Estate
Best car I ever owned by a country mile
The Ups
Having owned almost every make of consumer market car in over 40 years of motoring, for the past 12 years I have settled with Audi. This is my fourth A6 Avant and my first multitronic. I've now owned the car for over two years and whilst I would normally have changed it a year ago, I simply cannot bring myself to do so. This car handles brilliantly in all conditions, provides a ride that I can best describe as "Club Class" motoring, the multitronic is as flexible and smooth as it could be and features such as the electronic brake, auto wipers and lights serve to enhance the pleasure of driving it. What's more, there is enough space in the boot in which to hold a small disco and I barely notice when I am towing a 16' speedboat. Over the years I have had the pleasure of being served by three different Audi dealerships and have popped into several others for advice when needed. Their service is attentive and every effort is made to ensure satisfaction. The car has proved to be pretty economical too. I have achieved the claimed 42mpg a few times but only when I am as light footed as a mouses whisker. I do about 15k a year in mixed environments and estimate an average of 36mpg.
The Downs
As stated, I consider this car to be a "keeper". However I am nervous about the longevity of the dreaded Dual Mass Flywheel and the horrendously expensive Diesel Particulate Filter. I've decided to save regularly as a contingency rather than pay the ridiculous cost of extending a warranty that doesn't actually cover these things anyway. Diesel is rapidly becoming a more expensive option than petrol even with the edge on mpg so I suspect the residual value of a car like mine is set to plummet. If that happens; the upside is that these cars are going to become absolute bargains.
