I see listed under the latest "drive the deal" News item dated 21st January, that they list the Ford Ka with the latest 1.3 engine. Does anyone know if this model has received a new motor, as I am certainly not aware of any changes ?
Ford Ka - DavidHM
Yeah, the 2003 versions have slightly different interior trim, wheel covers and the 68/70 bhp engine (depending on who you listen to) from the new Fiesta. It's still based on the Endura E, but with slightly more power (up from 60 bhp).

The special offer Kas for £4995 last year were run out models with the old engine.

Thanks David for your informative reply.

The newly released 70PS engine is very different from the previous 60PS engine. It is OHC instead of pushrod and is made in a new factory in South Africa. If you compare the appearance of old and new engines, you will see a big difference.

Pete your posting on the replacement Ka engine seems to conflict with H.J`s car x car breakdown, which states that in September 2002, the Valencia pushrod engine was increased from it`s original 59 bhp to 65 bhp. I am still confused on this, and would appreciate further clarification !! It would seem that the 1.6 OHC engine is made in South Africa, has 95 bhp and will be fitted to the Sportka only.

HJ's review is fairly clear - the original engine was the Endura, newer models have the Valencia. However, only 65 bhp from a 1.3 would suggest it's hardly the latest technology. I must admit to being intrigued by this as well - I've read a lot bad about the old Ka engine and was wondering how many of these problems will carry over to the new engine and why Ford didn't fit the (seemingly quite good) 1.25 Zetec instead...

The endura *is* the valencia!

Both originally out of the Anglia of the early 60's.

It wouldn't fit!

I believe they developed an engine for the Ka with Yamaha but it never made it to fruition. The only thing they had that fitted was the old 1.3.

It does the job OK though. Our Ka is fine with it. Not great but OK. Just make sure you change the plugs a lot so they don't corrode into the head!

There is a lot of confusion in the Press about these engines and I vaguely remember reading HJ's comment which was wrong. The engine fitted until recently is the pushrod 1.3 HCS engine from Valencia rated at 60PS and loosly based on the old Anglia engine from 1959. There is no increased power version of this engine and it is replaced by the 1.3 SOHC engine from South Africa engine plant. This is rated at 68bhp/70PS but the power has been quoted incorrectly in some circles at 65bhp. This is where HJ was confused. There will soon be a Sport Ka available with a 1.6 SOHC engine from SA engine plant rated at 90 or 95PS. Not sure exactly without checking. Hope this clarifies.

Just to clarify some other points posted by others. Endura is just a marketing name and can be seen on other engines e.g. Diesels! Best to ignore this. The 1.25 engine fitted in Fiesta and called Zetec SE or Sigma was originally designed by Yamaha. It is made in Wales now at Bridgend. It would fit Ka but is much too expensive and this is the reason it is not fitted in Ka or even the new StreetKa.

As an ex Ford Motor Co employee, Pete F should know what he is talking about regarding this new motor, - that being the case should H.J. not be correcting his car x car breakdown for the Ka ????
Ford Ka - Jase
Thanks for that PeteF. I stand corrected. 1 point for identifying Yamaha?

The Ka was supposed to have a two stroke compact engine (not the Yamaha 1.25 motor). The motoring press tested the prototype engines in Fiestas a few years ago and I think there were a few released for testing to the Police in order to run up high testing miles. This accounts for the Kas small nose and the problem in marketing the Ka below the Fiesta without an overlap of models, consequently the, until now, lack of engine options.

We have a (early Dec 02) 2003MY Ka. It's an OHC Duratec 8v 68bhp engine under the bonnet. At the time Ford were doing 2002 59bhp models for £4995. Because our dealer had run out of 02 models we got an 03 for the same price. Ford's ad in yesterdays paper had 03 models listed at £5995 otr. The price we paid still seems like a good deal to me for the latest spec.

The 2-stroke engine(orbital)was dead years before the KA was even thought of!!.Your KA has the the conventional Anglia/Kent/Valencia/HCS lump.
Ford Ka - jc
You missed out SportKa.
Ford Ka - jc
I may be wrong;there was an 8v Duratec(whatever that is) introduced in September.

I have got this info direct from H.J. which should now finally settle the mis-understanding.

Right, here we go: the definitive answer from Steve Cropley at Autocar. It
is the old iron block Valencia engine that dates back to the Ford Anglia.
But with a new overhead cam alloy head instead of the old pushrods. Thanks
for bringing this up. Now corrected in car by car breakdown.
