Peugeot 307 - Rear brake disk hot/smelly - olivier74

I have just notice some smell when getting out of the car after some city commuting, smell coming from the rear driver side wheel. The brake disk is very hot (burnt my finger!). The other disks are warm but certainly not that hot. Also it feels a bit sticky when driving as in less power this morning, -5°C with a cold engine might be normal though.

Any suggestions? The smell could be the brake pads although it has a rubber/plastic smell.

Thanks

Your rear brake caliper is seized or not releasing for any number of reasons.

I'd bet a fair amount on a seized handbrake actuator. The cold weather will shine a glaring light on any "iffyness" in that area.

Seems to be the way of things with rear discs.

As above.

I'd advise stripping down both sides to ensure even operation. Do it soon or you'll wear out the pads - replace the discs (and pads) if they've been overheated to the point they show any 'bluing'

It has been a few days now and it seems it really was a sticky handbrake. It was only -5°C so I didn't expect. I've been parking with a gear in like I used to in France when -10°C and that seems to have identified the problem, easy and cheap!! Thanks

The caliper and/or handbrake mechanism shouldn't be siezing at these mild temperatures. You should have it stripped, cleaned, lubed and reassembled. Otherwise the problem may return, or you may have a very slight drag on one which may not be noticed in driving but it will rob you of economy and wear your pads out fast.
