SEAT Toledo 2006 - Engine rebuild 1.9tdi - VW & Seat owner

This cars engine seized at the traffic lights yesterday. Ran out of oil. Is it an economical job to get the engine rebuilt? Seat quoting £3400 plus vat for new engine. Anyone have an experience of this?

Probably cheaper to fit a used engine out of a side/rear impact write-off.

Have tried to find one. No luck yet! Must be a common problem

This is interesting because a lot of us on here tend to advise used diesel car buyers to go for this engine. Can you tell us (if you know) why it ran out of oil?

I bought this car 2nd hand from a Seat dealer 2 yrs ago with only 40k for an employee. Now done 68K.Always been serviced on time at 50k & 60k. Driver has never checked the oil on the dipstick! Always goes by the dash warning lights. Dealer says when warning light comes on on this model it's normally too late! Have run Skoda's & VW's with this engine for mileage well into 6 figures so that's why I bought this car. Will be reminding my other drivers to check their oil levels regularly.

I didn't like to be rude and suggest that! Let's hope your employee has other compensating talents.

An independent garage specialising in VAG cars is probably your best bet - cheaper than a main dealer but more reliable than a generalist who might miss something through not knowing these engines well enough.

I did get it recovered to an independent yesterday (after Seat's quote) who is willing to investigate and see if anything he can do. I'm sure they repair them in Eastern europe!

I've had a couple of old bangers stop due to engine failure in the past.

One was a Ford Zephyr Essex V6 3.0 where the oil pump hex drive shaft went round (rather than around!).

The other was a Ford Cortina Pinto 2.0 with big end failure - didn't seize but wow what a noise. Was replaced with a recon which nearly failed a year later with yet again with another hex drive shaft going round (presumably not replaced @ recon).

They both failed under load rather than tickover though. Both only had crank damage.

My previous two cars didn't burn a drop of oil inbetween services in over 150K miles, didn't stop me checking it weekly - you are a motorist - the clue is in the word "motor". My current car likes a drop (just under half a litre per 1K miles) but then I've yet to own a rover V8 engined car that doesn't burn oil!
