CRV 2007 - Battery, it would seem! - past_it

Hi all, my CRV now 4 and a half years old didn't want to start???

I put it on charge for a couple of hours, started ok, but the next day same problem so jump started it and went for a run of 100 miles or more. Next day NO Start!!

I can't believe that for no apparent reason and in 'summer time' the battery should fail.

I measured the charging voltage at just over 14volts, so I think that should be OK.

The car was serviced by Honda 4 months ago and the battery was checked.

The car has only done 30,000 miles ..... Is it me or do I need a new battery?

Thank you all for looking.

If its not the battery then its probably the alternator.

Hope its the battery.

Go for a run then call in at a local motor factors and ask them to check your battery. Most have a pulsed discharge device that calculates the capacity of the battery. This will tell you if the battery is at the end of it's life. Regards Peter

My time honoured 'no equipment required' method for checking the alternator is as follows.

Get the car in a dark place, switch on every conceivable electrical device, heated screen, lights, blower etc, with the engine at idle, blip the throttle and if the headlight brighten slightly your alternator is okay and its the battery thats probably at fault.

However, there may be another electrical fault on the car which is draining what may be a perfectly good battery, so the 'go for a run and then get it tested' is a good idea.

14+ volts across the battery would indicate a healthy alternator. To check for current drain disconnect one battery lead - if you can do so without upsetting anything, then connect an amp meter between the lead you have disconnected from the battery and the battery terminal with everything turned off. If it reads less than 100m/a it should be OK and your battery will be the problem.

Modern batteries do tend to fail suddenly as the large plate area gives enough capacity to start the car even when the actual capacity is very low but leaves little or no reserve so even if its had a light load while parked it can be enough to run it nearly flat.

I don't rate Japanese car batteries - although that's based on a sample of one and the CRV may well use a UK-sourced battery.

At under 3 years old, the Panasonic battery in my Japan-built Subaru started to fail, not helped by the fact that it was a small battery for the size of engine by comparison to European brands, 52Ah for a 2.5 engine.

By contrast, my Vauxhall batteries have all lasted 10+ years from original.

The battery was the only thing that failed on the Subaru, excellent Japanese engineering apart from that.

the battery on my Audi A4 lasted 4 years. Good German engineering. On my Mercedes 5 years. On UK built Fiesta 12 years.

My Japanese experience? Son's Yaris : 11 years, my Yaris 8 years..(both Japan built)

There's a message in there somewhere...
