Foolproof, lay the old 8'x4" top down on the back of the new (bigger) offcut. Carefully draw a line around. Special care for the cutty-off-bit for the door frame at one end of the 8' and the slight oval out of the middle of the other (for the khazi) and we're done. But the result is a bit too wide and a tad too long and isn't flat to the floor. S'pose the straight edge of the template might have been up against a none-straight edge of offcut. Anyone out there know what they're doing. Rest of famile highly amused, causing loss of sense of humour at my end. B***dy,DIY, etc.

I learn't a long time ago that most of us can't lay carpet like a 'proper' carpet fitter. I've seen loads of jobs where an individual has said to me..." did it meself, looks alright dunnit?.....and, of course, out of politeness you agree. But in reality , in the same way most of us can't repair and respray a bent wing to professional standards, we can't lay carpet to professional standard either. Agreed it'll do the job but a carpet fitter, with a stretcher, carpet gripper and ten/twenty years experience will do it better, quicker and doesn't charge a fortune.

The professionals ability and knack to stretch it over the edge of the grippers leaving it dead straight and flat in line with the wall is very good and worth paying for. Proper carpet fitter wont cost a fortune, albiet the one i had was a completely useless pleb and had to get someone else to do the job properly. They dont mind doing it with your own carpet either. Another good tip is if you're using cheap thin carpet then make sure you use nice thick premium underlay, cheap carpet + cheap underlay = carpet refit in 12 months time.
