Ford Focus - 2010 Focus New or Used - scotlander

After much deliberation about what car to get i reckon i want a ford focus but can't decide whether to buy new or old.

I have been to a couiple of garages and seen new 2010 1.6 zetecs for around £13k with 3 yr warranty, first year tax and roadside assistance included along with 0% finance with a 40% deposit.

Used ones appear to be about £8.5k but the finance deals seem to be 10% or more.

Taking everying into account the new one would not cost much over 3-5 years, is it worth it?

Have not owned a car for over 10 years so any advice appreciated!

Cheers

2010 models will have been hanging around outside in huge carparks for a long time now-not ideal.

That old zetec engine is pretty lacklustre by today's standards.

The price isn't particularly attractive. Frankly you can pick up an older Focus with the same engine for under a grand. See if you're still happy with it in a year's time...

Personally, I would say seriously reconsider your preferred choice of car! If you haven't owned a motor for more than a decade, what benchmark are you using to choose the Focus as a car you would be happy to pay interest for? I would spend a day going around a few other dealerships and see what else you can find for that money. Try a used Golf for example, take some time to look over the cabin and interior quality, and then go back and look at the Ford - you'll soon see where I'm coming from!

If you really do want a Focus, the only sensible option is go to an auction and pick up an ex-fleet motor for peanuts. Paying serious money for what is essentially disposable transport makes very little sense; there is much better out there!

Not settled on Focus yet but thought they were cheapish to buy run and reliable.

Originally wanted a Golf or A3 but considering i will be doing low mileage am now thinking of something cheaper.

Any other suggestions welcome.

Cheers

As an owner of a slightly older Focus of that model (2007 car) I can tell you that this business of the parts being cheap is a myth.

I've come from owning many Japanese and Korean cars over the years and I see no evidence whatsoever that the Focus parts are any cheaper.

The Focus is reliable enough but I don't think the build quality is anything to write home about.

As has been said these cars make great cheap second-hand purchases -- they're decent to drive and the build is adequately good. But don't be under any illusions that they're class-leading or anything -- they're just an average, run of the mill motor.

Seconded. I think the 'journalists' (ha ha!) get the high spec sporty ones and rave about how wonderful the handling and chassis is. But this bears no correlation to the LX/Zetec models. Build quality again seemed average. A few broken parts cropped up. Nothing major though.

If you're not in a hurry I'd wait a couple of months for them to clear the 2010 cars and start pushing the new one.

Here in Spain, a new model Focus with climate, bluetooth, auto-headlights, rain-sensing wipers, dimming rear-view mirror, alloys and several other premium options is already down to 14900€ on the road, that's a shade under 13k in coin of the realm... given that Fords depreciate faster than Northern Rock shares, I'd at least go for the current model rather than the old one...
