I have a new polo with large plastic lensed h'lights which I want to take to France on holiday. With my old cars I just stuck some black tape on the lights over markings on the glass lenses. With this car there are no markings on the lenses and my vw garage advises fitting lense protectors first and then sticking their expensive stickers to those to avoid damaging the plastic !

Any advice gratefully received

I can't fault their advice.

Alternatively, most seem to get away with turning the adjuster as low as possible (maximum weight in the back setting on the little rotary knob).

Have you read the driver's handbook?

This tallies with my experiences on the ferries - hardly anyone fits beam deflectors. Last trip I got stopped by the Gendarmes and all they were bothered about was passports and a quick look in the back of the van.

Just come back this week, didnt fit them but had them in tha car as dealer could not supply protectors on time. if you do fit them, put the headlights on to warm the plastic and approx horizontal with the middle of the reflector behind the lens and to the offside of each lamp. that's what it says in my fitting instructions, similiar headlights, and do it in the evening shining against a wall, by the way just fit the circles. or get them from halfords and they'll fit them for a couple of quid.

PS we didn't do any night driving anyway. by the way unleaded an eye-watering 1.76 a litre but diesel 1.35 in france.

Good luck and happy motoring. make sure you keep the hi-viz in the car, BIG fine, and get all the reccomended bits. (which i'm sure you know)

I used to stick on some black plastic duct tape in a vaguely triangular shape somewhere on the lens to show willing - but I don't bother now. No-one seems to check.

You are right they don't seem to check.I bet the Gendarmes do if you was in accident.

I would't take the change.

The circular stick on deflectors work fine on my Passat's plastic lights and the instructions cover just about every car so you'll get them in the right place easy enough. Clean the lens and warm them up on full beam for a couple of minutes and they'll stick fast. They're cleverly designed so you can't easily reuse them. The AA ones on Amazon can be had for much less than Halfords and other places.

Last year I was stopped and checked as I parked up at the Aire de la Baie de la Somme on the A16 45 minutes from Calais. They checked the deflectors asking for the lights to be switched on, checked for 2 hi viz jackets (keep these where you can reach them in the car, not the boot) and all paperwork including letter from the company authorising me to use the car abroad. They chose not to speak English but nevertheless all very amiable and courteous. Not worth the risk IMO of not having everything sorted before you set off.
