The claim - if you have one - is against the supplying dealer under Sale of Goods Act. It's the kind of issue that might get fixed under "goodwill" especially if you can find evidence of widespread failure or a defect.

I would snatch their hand off. The chances are there is no legal liability and you will not do any better bringing an action. Just say yes and take the car in.

I agree with Lucy re dealer's offer. As the part is out of manufacturer's warranty, any contribution made is purely on a goodwill basis.

It should be noted that your contribution of say 50% will give you a further 12 month warranty on the new pas pump.

You could of course go to law, lose and and end up paying 100% of the bill plus court costs.
