307/A3/A4/Golf/focus - Economical Car - 500 miles a week - pitbull

Im looking for a car that has cheap road tax and cheap to run. 100 mile round trip to work each day. About 50% on dual carridgeway the rest stop and start crosscountry.

Has to be five door, just not a supermini (may consider supermini estate though), 307 size most likely. Auto or manual.

Budget - 2-4k.

I currently drive a three door 1600cc Honda Civic 03 Automatic.

Any suggestions/views most welcome.

Spending £2-4K there no guarantee of reliability from any car. Any of which could have been abused by several owners.

If dependability was the #1 criteria, I wouldn't buy a modern diesel.

Any of the cars listed could be brilliant or a dog. Don't over look the excellent Mitsubishi Colt 1.5D, reasonably refined, fuel efficient and generally reliable and best of all tend to be bought and run by private owners not as company cars.

Xsara Picasso 1.8 petrol.

I ran one doing 500+ miles a week (on LPG) for three years, massively practical, very cheap to run. Cheap to insure, tyres cheap, exhaust cheap, non dealer servicing , all round economy motoring.
