Never say Devon again

Please could you suggest answers to my needs? I shall be travelling all over Devon for my new job. I know and like the Toyota RAV-4 but would prefer something rather smaller. My base will be a place at the bottom of a short but steep hill with a rough surface so I need four wheel drive, but only to be sure of getting to the ordinary road in any conditions. Top priority is reliability, but of course I would like a pleasant drive. I prefer a manual gearbox. I would value your advice.
