I'm having a weird problem, I noticed a burning smell from the drivers side right wheel yesterdat. Smelled like a jammed brake caliper. Applied some WD40 to the caliper to free it up. This morning, came out and the tyre was flat.

I presumed this was co-incidence, so put the spare on this morning. Travelled approx 3 miles earlier, the brake caliper is red hot again, and the spare is now flat. Neither tyre has any sign of damage or a puncture, and the tyres appear to inflate again.

If I have a jammed brake, then I can understand the caliper getting hot. But how the hell could this cause 2 tyres to go flat?

Your post does not make sense.

"and the tyres appear to inflate again."

Impossible.

And putting WD40 on brake calipers? You are either winding us up or trying to kill yourself. Brakes and oil do not mix.

You should take it to a competent garage and get them to look att it: you appear a danger to yourself..

Thanks!

I meant that I can re-inflate the tyres with a pump, so they are obviously not punctured.

As for the WD40, a tiny amount around the springs and workings of the calipers isn't going to cause the car to career out of control - I'm not spraying it all over the discs as well.

madf was being a bit harsh-calipers move, a little oil on moving parts is not a bad thing! If you have a sticking brake, clearly, the disk and caliper will get hot. If the heat is transferred to the wheel, then the air in the tyre will heat up and, corrospondingly the pressure will also rise. The additional pressure could exacerbate any slow leaks. As the tyre cools down, the pressure will fall below what you started with-hence the tyre is flat. All perfectly consistent. Testing is quite easy. Just go for a gentle run on a quiet road, and avoid using the brakes (use the gears if necessary) as much as possible. Pull over and immediately feel the disks. They should be hot to the touch but not burning hot.

This will not go away. Either the slides are siezed/sticking or the piston is stuck in the calliper housing. It nees to come apart. You are cooking the wheel bearing, The reason for the flats may be that when parked the raising heat is distoring the alloy rim and causing the lip seal to fail. If you continue to drive with this hot calliper you will boil the brake fluid and may loose all braking ability. Regards Peter

Cheers folks, all makes sense now. I drove it gently home from work (couple of miles) and the brake pads were smoking when I got home.

Pulled it off the road and will wait for recovery to the garage. Excellent advice not to drive it any more! Looks like the disc is well worn (large lips around the rim) and will likely need replacement anyway. maybe this has contributed to the pads jamming up.

have to agree with peter on that one and sounds to me like youve taken the sensible option and have a garage to carry out the work for you,,,sounds like your gonna need new discs for definite and new pads,,hopefully the garage will be able to salvage your calipers by either freeing up the sliders or piston, maybe both,,,if you ever tackle the job yourself though dont rely on just wd40 to solve the problem,,wd40 may free up working parts on the brakes but is not a long term solution to the problem, use some copperslip next time on the sliders after making sure they are clean of all the old crap first, put a little bit on the back of your pads as well this stops them from squeeling.

If the disks themselves are that badly worn/lipped, that would indicate that the pistons/sliders have travelled "where no man had gone before" and therefore likely to seize up. Will be interested to read about the final outcome.......ebt

Any update on this at all ???

Hello again all.

The issue was indeed a stuck piston on the caliper. I was unable to free it so changed out the caliper completely, plus fitted new discs and pads (as the discs were badly worn, and the pads had overheated and cracked).

This has sorted the issue, I have tried both tyres on the car and they are working perfectly. Air must have been getting heated up and most likely escaping through the tyre rim. I have had them both tyres checked and resealed just to be on the safe side.

All working fine now and back to normal!
