Can anyone assist? My 96 1.9L 405TD has recently developed a fuel delivery problem, the car suffers from fuel starvation when going uphill, it ticks over ok (once I get it started) and it revs up ok, but if I jack the front of the car up, it cuts out.

There are no apparent leaks and I’ve run the engine straight from a can under the bonnet thus bypassing the primer in case of air leaks.

The problem started when I floored it to get into traffic, however, this could be incidental.

Any Ideas?

Firstly have you changed the fuel filter lately? If not it would be wise to do so. It certainly sounds like air ingress, you wont see any leaks because the intake is under vacuum, if its a Bosch pump the likely cause is the injector leak off pipes, if you replace the last 6" or so of fuel pipe to the pump with clear plastic you will be able to see the air bubbles.

Does the problem still exist when running from the can?

Thanks Peter.N.

The problem still exists whilst driving uphill even with a can full of diesel under the bonnet, however, thanks for the tip using clear fuel line, I'll try that tonight.

Sorry, I meant to add, I have changed the fuel filter.

It is a Bosch pump, there is a diaphragm on the top of it, could that have gone?
