Hi all,

I do regular trips from Cambridge to Bristol (about 190 miles) and noticed towards the tail end of my journey last night that the handbrake light was dimly lit; looking at the manual this would suggest that the brake fluid needs checking - but a few quick Googles reveal that this could be a sympton of a bigger problem.

I've not had time to check the level (at work now until late) but could perhaps do so tomorrow morning - but just wanted a heads-up to see if this is something I should take to a garage and ask them to check other things to?

I bought the car 2nd hand last October; it's already had a driver side wheel bearing replaced (at the expense of the garage that sold it to me) and was given new front brake pads before I took it away.

Thanks for any advice/guidance

That light can be triggered by low brake fluid, handbrake not firmly off or even a minor fault in the wiring(worn insulation leaking power to earth). The fact that it is only on faintly tends to the third-but all should be checked.

Thanks - is this a common problem with the Focus/Fords? I think the light is more to do with indicating the level of fluid than it being a wiring fault (it's a dim light but visible, and it lights up fully when the handbrake is applied) - and then I'm concerned that if it is the level of brake fluid it means that the brakes themselves will need replacing - more expense after Christmas is not what I needed!

I would have thought that the car would have lasted a bit longer before coming up with monthly faults - it's been stood for two weeks over Christmas, and then the drive down was in the face of some strong snow/sleet, but nothing that I wouldn't expect a car to deal with.

Hi,

As you have said, the garage has replaced the pads, so this eliminates a problem with them. It may just be low fluid. If the garage removed some fluid prior to replacing the pads (like all garages do...hahaha!!) then maybe they only pull 'enough' back in to get the job done. As the pads have worn in, its most likely the level has dropped and just needs a top up.

Hope this helps

Thanks - that's the kind of reassurance I wanted/needed!

Once the light comes on is the car unsafe to drive? Or would a short trip still be potentially acceptable (as long as I don't hammer the brakes?)

No-one here can answer that.

You'll have to lift the bonnet and have a look!

Managed to do this in the early hours of this morning - not great lighting but enough to take a look at what was there; must say that the fluid looks pretty full to me!

Started the car up, and the light is still dimly lit when the handbrake is off - so perhaps it is wiring? Is there anything else that the light could be asking me to check?
