Dimplex electric coal effect fire - what denotes the direction of an AC motor - injection doc

My parents coal effect fire had an electric motor sieze, ( the one that reflcet the flames upwards ). We aquired a replacement from dimplex and fiited, all the wiring was colour coded so easy to replace but the motor now runs in the other direction so the flame effect goes downwards ! weird or what ?

Could it be a defective motor ? or what could be wrong ?

many thanks

Would changing over the positive and negative wires do the trick? It would on a DC motor.

It may be a DC motor

If its Ac the way its been wound determins the direction of the motor unlike dc motors where changing polarity changes direction and decreasing the voltage slows it down.A AC moror requires different windings for different speeds hence on washers you get fixed speeds except philips designed units which use dc motors and therefore have variable number of fixed speed drives.

Very few 240v AC motors are actually AC motors, most are "DC" with AC applied.

If it has brushes it is DC.

It may be a shaded pole ac motor.

Try speaking to the supplier

The motor is def running the wrong direction. I have tried swapping the wires but as i suspected it still runs in the wrong direction.

I will now write to the suppliers & keep you posted

I have actually had a thought today and the other option is to swap the motor over to the other side of the fire & just extend the supply cables. The shaft that the reflectors revolve on is the same both ends so would only need to drill 2 holes to mount the motor! The shaft is connected to the motor via a rubber sleeve so i reckon it could be easy.

oh I love using my engineering skills

I will see how that works when I next visit my parents.

The motor turned out to be an Ac motor so to prevent anymore delay I mounted the motor on the wrong side of the fire. I had to make up a new support bracket & extra loom etc but it worked a treat and now the flames rise up the back of the fire instead of starting at the top and going down.
Sometimes I prefer finding a good solution to just a fix.
