Toyota Auris - metalic noise from rear of car intermittant - ali mac

help - got carnew in jul 2008 -all fine until 2 months ago - started with very occasional squeal like noise from rear of car - however since then has worsened dramatically - still intermiten but when there very loud and sounds like metal on metal - sometimes goes away with braking , sometimes dissapears when driving - when there it is unbearable - had brakes checked and cleaned last week and all ok - took car into toyota today for accelorator repair and asked them to check out noise - told me was not the brakes/pads - only way to get rid of this would be to maybe !!! replace discs etc at a cost of 275 quid - and that this of course was not covered under warranty - i asked her if discs were definitely causing problem and she could not answer me - but she agreed that with only 16500 miles on clock seems low mileage to be having to replace these ( if problem at all )

im really worried as it is a lot of money to pay out without knowing if this is problem - am a student nurse and widowed and money tight - to think i traded in my jag for this car tosave money - she gave me cust servs tel no but wanted some back up info before i write to them - can anyone help - whats the normal changeover time of these discs - bearings - could they have been faulty from the start. any help/info gratefully required

Does the noise increase/decrease or stop when you brake?

Did you get to the bottom of the noise? I have been experiencing the same thing with my Auris for the last 4 weeks. I hear it at higher speeds, but is intermittment, lasts about 10-20 seconds and happens every 10-20 seconds as well, it's got more frequent since it started. The dealer says it's the rear brakes sticking and something to do with the front right brake carrier.

Ali - get the dealer to check the car out and contact you before doing any repair that isn't covered by warranty. If it's intermittent and not caused directly by braking, it doesn't sound like a brake problem. Maybe get a mechanic to go out in the car with you.
