Hi, my golf 4 TDI has a problem ...... started it the other day and it ran rough, gunned the throttle and it picked up so drove it for about 10 miles. had some intermitent misfire then suddenly died and could not restart. towed it back in gear to see if it would fire nothing ..... had to leave it!! tried today and it fired once but no joy looked at fuel comming out of fuel filter and it seems to be drawing fuel but still no ignition any ideas!!

The first thing I would have suggested is a blocked fuel filter, has it been changed recently? If fuel is getting to the pump but none coming out it could be a faulty fuel cut off solonoid but as I am not familier with the pumps VW use I can't help much further.

These Golfs are fitted with an air intake shut -off flap .It is possible that it has jammed shut and is not allowing air to enter the engine.Remove the flexi air intake pipe to the inlet manifold and take a look.It is operated by a vacuum actuator.hth

i was told the fuel filter was changed about 3 months ago (3k) i might bypass the filter and see what happens?

Bypassing a fuel filter on a diesel engine is potential death to the fuel system.
These are sophisticated engines and will not tolerate bodging. If there is nothing obvious causing your problems, get the codes read and fit a new filter of reputable manufacture - preferably Bosch or Mann & Hummel. Some VAG OE filters are now Chinese and give problems with air leaks.
Prime the system (I use a vac pump) before trying again and check the lift pump operation very carefully.

i am running reg diesel, i was also thinking of getting the vag-com disk and lead off e-bay to check codes any thought's on that?

I have used a Chinese interface lead off Ebay, works a treat.
Free basic software is available from ross-tech.com which allows you to read & reset fault codes or you can upgrade to the full diagnostic software

hi got my vag.com cable plugged it in and it only comes up with one fault. it say's mass airflow meter has an intermittant fault....... but i don't think that would stop it starting what do you guys think?

You're right, MAF isn't even read during starting.
It could be EGR valve, as the ECU looks for a reduction in MAF to measure the EGR valve's exhaust gas quantity as the exhaust gas is substituted for the air, but even so, I don't think this would make it hard to start.
Is it a PD (unit injector) engine?

Hi guys ok an up date i have changed the fuel filter as i noticed when i by passed the filter i could get it to fire on 1 or two cylinders, but when i reconnected the fuel filter it would not fire at all. Once i changed the fuel filter i bled the pump up to the injectors then fired some easy start into the inlet manifold down stream of the maf. it started and ran for about thirty seconds but after that it would only fire as before. Plugged in the vag com and only got the maf fault no other faults indicated. any ideas ? should i suspect the pump or could it be something simple?

Hi finaly managed to get a fault on the Vag-com it says no fault code found but this is what come off the computer!

No fault code found
Right i put the controller number into Google and it comes up with the ecu now will this require a reset or is it kaput? If i get a new one what will i have to do to to get it to run with my car?
