There was a thread, on the TDI Forum about engine oil and PD engines. (In the lube section) An attempt was made to gather information - something like as below.
I thought it may be interesting, to do similar on the range of cars owned by forum members ( not just PD)
CAR
OIL/S USED (oil heath history ;-)
MANUFACTURERS SPEC
CHANGE INTERVAL
OIL RELATED ISSUES
The idea was to cut and paste the above into a new post and then write answers. It was a struggle - people drifted off from the format.
But a tentative picture started to emerge. (for the PD)
1) That use of a 5w30 (or 0W30) oil was a possible indicator of cam damage
2) That cars that had multiple oils - different at every change - also an indicator
The latter is interesting. Did motorists who took vacillated across a range of oils often returning to what they had in originally, take less care on the specs?
I can`t remember the intervals.
A little entertainment?
Regards

I dont bother about oil brands, but ensure it meets the car manufacturers spec. Change the oil every 6 months if it needs it or not, never had a lubrication related problem.

Got a 14 Yr old Galaxy that is going to scrappage for a PD Octavia, 5w30 is the VAG recommendation for this engine but should be spec 507.00. Perhaps the OP's in TDI forum using right grade but not to VAG spec. I'm sure it's an American based site where high tec diesels are virtually unknown in US. Allegedly the oil is at high pressure at the lobes and needs a special anti-foam agent hence the high price. Went to local VAG dealer looking for £54 for 5L. Found TPS who only deal with original VAG parts, I can get a 20L drum of Quantum longlife 3 5w30 for £80, which is VAG own brand oil (probably Shell helix or Castrol edge). Will be going down that road and yearly-10K oil changes. Galaxy always changed every 6 months with 10w40 semi synth Ford spec oil, no problems, just the rest of it is shot.

CAR 96 E class MB 124..320 petrol, owned approx 7 years, one previous owner full MB history.
OIL Fuchs 5w40 full synthetic since our ownership.
SPEC Don't have clue about man spec.
INTERVAL Annual about 6/7k miles.
ISSUES used to change meself between services with Millers 5w40 synthetic, but mileage now so low annual will do, and i leave it to my venerable and trustworthy indy.
CAR Toyota Hilux 3.0d4d, bought new 2 years ago.
OIL Toyota's own 10w40 semi synthetic.
SPEC 5w30 CF preffered but equivalents allowable incl 10w40.
INTERVAL Annual service at 8K ish (recommended 9K), i slip a half mileage change in with the same genuine Toyota oil.
ISSUES i would prefer to use Millers or Fuchs 5w40 fully synthetic, but Toyo will not play ball and its under warranty so it'll have to wait, once i'm on the syhthetic oil i may leave it to annual changes (don't tell anyone here).
Funnily enough my Toyo dealer doesn't like using 5w30 as they say it's too thin, in practice our car runs quietly where other owners are reporting engines a bit rattly sounding (injectors blamed by some and some have been replaced) so they may well be right.
The engine is driven quite fast but is allowed to warm up properly and to cool down before shutdown.
Generally i service above and beyond whats recommended, and touch wood many years since any asscociated problems. Normally buy used vehicles over 3 years old.

VAN = 2005 Fiat Punto 1.3 Multijet
OILS = Mobil 1 0W40, 300 miles to 30,000 (current.)
MANUFACTURERS SPECS = 5W40, to ACEA B4 & API CF (12,000 interval)
INTERVAL = first change to Mobil 1 at 300 miles. 2nd, 1,000 miles.
changed now at half manufacturers interval (6,000 miles) In practice this is often around 4,000 miles between 6/8 months)
ISSUES = hydraulic tappets quieter on cold starts after changing to Mobil 1.
CAR = 2002 Fiat Punto 1.9D
OILS = Halfords fully synthetic 5W40 to 20,000 miles. Mobil Super M 15W40 to 35,000 miles.
Shell Rimula 15W40 to 56,000 (current)
MANUFACTURERS SPEC, 10W40 to ACEA B3 & API CF. (interval 6,000 miles)
CHANGE INTERVAL 300, 1,000, - then 3,000, to date.
ISSUES = oil leak from cam cover after first MOT. (blame max revs)
Reduced to nothing with 15W40 but then worsened after a further 4.5 years leading to me fixing it and at the same time, blanking the EGR.
Using diesel specific Rimula for it`s extra detergency. Now considering extending changes to 4,000 miles following less soot loading of oil with EGR deletion.

CAR = Citroen 2CV 1986
OILS = Usually Mobil 1 - (was it 5w50 then?) sometimes Duckhams or Castrol 15W40
MANUFACTURERS SPEC = 15W40 (6,000 miles)
INTERVAL = 6,000 miles
ISSUES = Ran oil temperature at a consistent 5c higher with either the Duckhams or Castrol 15W40 - compared with Mobil 1.
(I had drilled, tapped and fitted an oil temperature gauge sender into the sump drain plug)
CAR = 1991 Maestro Clubman D. (Perkins Prima non turbo)
OILS = Esso mineral to D5 (top diesel specific spec at the time)
MANUfACTURERS SPEC = ? 10,000 (or was it 12,000) interval. D5 was better than recommended.
CHANGE INTERVAL = Half manufacturers spec.
ISSUES = After around 60,000 miles, I was asked by the dealer what I was doing with it as it was quieter than its peers. One of their mechanics told me they had really `been pushing it` with the official oil change interval.
At 130,000 miles the engine seemed as new and still used no oil.

This thread is an attempt to put the popular interest in engine oil and issues, into a strict structure. (see the TDI forum for similar)
Can any further posts (as time goes by) please follow the format as above.
Thanks

My partner's PSA 106D (TUD5), owned from nearly new has now done almost 150k miles.
The engine is seemingly in perfect order, uses no appreciable oil between changes and still pulls well, starts exceptionally well and uses very little fuel. It has had no attention whatsoever other than cambelt changes, with the idlers and water pump being changed as a precaution at 100k miles. I wish I could buy a new one like it.
Oil and filter changes have been every 5k miles using Fuchs semi-synth 10W-40 and a carefully chosen oil filter (usually Mann & Hummel). I have always done this job carefully, myself.
I have recently stretched the oil change interval to 7.5k miles as the engine will probably outlast the car.
659.

CAR = Volvo S80 2.4 petrol 2000MY
OILS = Lidl 'Winergy' 15W40
MANUFACTURERS SPEC = Don't know
INTERVAL = When I remember
ISSUES = £8.99 for 5 litres.

CAR = Zafira 2.2 direct auto, 2006, currently at 51k miles
OILS = GM longlife LL-A spec 5W30 from Vauxhall
MANUFACTURERS SPEC = 5W30, every 20k
INTERVAL = serviced every 20k by dealer (annually), with an interim oil and filter change at (max) 10k by me, usually ends up being 7-10k between services as it's doing about 17k p.a.
ISSUES = Engine is slightly noisy, always has been since bought at 10k miles. Not getting much worse, but still seems slightly rattly. Noisier than other Zafira 2.2 directs I've heard.

CAR: Honda Accord VTEC 2.0 02 Reg.
OIL/S USED: Purchased from main dealer at 9,000 miles. Dealer used Mobil S 10/40 semi-syn but I specified Mobil 1 fully synthetic 0/30 for first service (see 'oil related issues' for how that turned out!).
Back to Mobil S for next few services, then dealer switched to Castrol Magnatec 10/40 semi, then went back to Mobil S.
In between dealer services, I used various suitable 10/40 semis for changes including Duckhams (once), Coma (once), Halfords (once)
Last two services (indy) used GM 10/40 semi.
MANUFACTURERS SPEC: 10/40 semi-synthetic to ACEA A3/B3
CHANGE INTERVAL: Changed oil and filter at half Honda's recommended intervals - ie 4,500 rather than 9,000 miles.
OIL RELATED ISSUES: Knowing more about my car than the company that made it (Ho Ho!) I insisted on Mobil 1 for the first service after purchase. The already tappety VTEC promptly began to sound like an old tractor. Honda, Swindon told me to go straight back to 10/40 semi, as specified. Suitably chastened, I did just that.
Since then no issues. Never needed a drop of oil, currently at 67,000 miles.
