Hi I have the 2.0 hdi pug 406 with the 90 engine.
Problem I have is a ticking kind of noise from what sounds like the lower end of the O/S (cambelt side)
This is evident on start up but when the engine warms it tends to get better till toy accelerate then you can hear it again. The best way to describe it is like bearings in a tin can being shaken or rolled around.
When driving I get to 2100rpm and you can feel vibration through the steering wheel and pedals and you can hear the noise.
I used a wooden spoon as a crude stethoscope and listened to the head AND injector rail etc but there are no unusual noises from these areas only when i listen in the O/S front wheel arch i can hear the ticking noise.
It seems very low down like about the water pump area or bottom pulley but the bottom pulley seems fine.
Also when I accelerate the engine picks up fine but when i let go of the pedal the engine stutters below the usual rpm before settling back to about 850rpm please can someone help?
Rundown
Ticking noise low down on the O/S
vibration at 2100rpm
and a bit of hesitation when backing off the throttle
Thanks in advance

Paint a white line across the crank pulley with Tippex or such. Then check after a couple of days, if the line is now broken the crankshaft (damper) pulley is knackered and needs replacing ASAP.

Thanks for that!
But I was lead to believe the pulley had a certain amount of play to allow for bottom end torque etc and surely the tippex would break straight away with the conversion from torque through the pulley?
Just a thought?
I have taken the aux belt off and started the engine this seems to have stopped the noise so it would indicate one of the items using the aux belt!
I tried looking for play on the tensioner s and they seemed fine the power steering pump had a little play but apparently this is normal.
I did check the bottom pulley and found it would move a little if i twisted it which i guess is the damper!
I already have a brand new bottom pulley sitting in the shed ready to fit as a matter of course.
What i have also found while inspecting the car is the rear engine mount looks shot and i think this may be where the vibration is coming from
I have looked at the info on changing it but it looks a right slaver apparently the O/S Drive shaft has to come out to do the job.
Seems nothing is ever simple these days! How i miss my Volvos and Vauxhalls lol.

A good tell tale sign for a failing lower pulley will be a lot of dust, usually rusty, all around the immediate area.
The lower rear mount bush can be changed with the drive shaft in situ if you remove the complete bracket assembly, but you will need a big hammer to drive the bush out. I had to heat it with a blow lamp to get things moving.
Incidently, replacing the bush also cured the gearbox crunching in third gear!

I posted some pics on the HJ photo group years ago illustrating this very problem but can't for the life of me remember where!
Your noise will almost certainly be a defective crankshaft pulley.

Is this it?

The old photogroup has shut down, but got moved across beforehand.

Had exact same noise with my HDI it was the lower crankshaft pulley.
