Hello everyone,
I am a UK citisen, recently moved out to Oman with family on a technical job.
Last 7 cars have been Toyotas and delighted with the reliability decided to continue the theme here and buy a Landcruiser, petrol is 14p a litre so consumption insignificant.
The 4.5 petrol model I purchased has some shift shock when the vehicle has been operated for a few miles, o.k. on first start of the morning when the transmission is cold'ish probabaly about 30 degrees C at 06:30 when off to work.
The car had this problem when I purchased it, I thought a small adjustment to the brake bands would sort it out but there does not seem to be any way of tampering with this model! ouch.
Does anyone have a fix? the filter has been replaced, £60 just for the bits and the oil replenished, a tube of silicone for the gasket will set you back 25 Omani Rials here, thats the thick end of £40!!!
Could there be a thermostatic valve designed to bypass the cooler for operation in cold climates?
Any help much appreciated,
Thanks guys,
Mike.

The trans cooler runs through the bottom of the radiator, cooling the fluid, and warming it up more quickly. These transmissions are virtually bulletproof, are you getting the o/d light flashing? Is it hard shifting in all gears? Have you checked the kickdown cable adjustment and throttle positioning sensor?

hi Dave, thanks for the response,
O/D works well and light comes on and off with the button as demanded, no flashing.
The engine coolant radiator has two small leaks where the unions are welded to the radiator, I top up daily a couple of pints, need to get that fixed soon. could there be a tie in here?could the pipes be blocked and the oil running hot, at the oil / filter change the oil was in good shape, looked and smelled O.K.
Would the two adjustments be easy to check? if so where would I get guidance, the dealers here are extortionate, and not beyond recommending a new transmission regardless.
As an engineer, professional pride deems I try to fix myself. I have tried to purchase a manual on an auction site but cannot find one, any advice on setting the system up or pointing at information would be greatly appreciated.
Jumps at lower gears when hot, not too bad at the top end with lots of momentum, mounts all checked good, this old bus is a delight when on the odd occasion it decides to do what it says on the tin, my wife and 3 kids are joining me in 4 weeks and I like the idea of this much metal round the family, so keen to have the motor in a condition that won't spook the wife.
Many thanks, hope you can respond again.
Mike.

You really need the factory manual, which can be bought from the dealers. Alternatively, post a question on ih8mud.com under the 80 series section, or tlocuk.co.uk, where you can get a link to the factory manuals online and some more practical advice.
