Car vectra 2.0Di ('96 diesel) miles: 158,000
Issue: Injector pump (?)
Car all of a sudden stalled at 70mph on a dual carriage way, pulled over, checked all looked ok under the bonnet before restarting. Car started and ticked over but would not rev or give enough power to pull of (kept stalling). Once stopped it had to be left several minutes before it would restart.
AA were called, he thought it was a blockage in the fuel line and towed me home. His reasoning was when unscrewing the bleed on the fuel filter he could hear air rushing into the vacuum formed by the engine trying to draw fuel, and that it started and ran for a short time after he opened the bleed on the filter.
Car would not start after the 30min tow home but 1 week later ran and drove 15 miles to a garage (in safe mode with the management light on) albeit roughly.

Garage thinks it's the injector pump, have done various tests, yet to speak to the owner to find out what tests.

A few Q's from me to anyone that can help...
When an injector pump starts failing is it a problem that is easy to pinpoint?
How can I be certain it's the injector pump. Would you expect an injector pump to be failing at this mileage and when they start to do they exhibit any particular characteristics (noises etc). I think this car is the low pressure diesel not the high pressure one.
I've been told it's not possible to get reconditioned ones, are non OEM parts available? Is it wise/possible to have the injector pump tested in isolation to the rest of the car and how can I be certain that it has been replaced if I go ahead with it as I've been told they are £1000+.
Basically if this was happening to you what would you do?!
What should I do!!!!!!
Thanks, Phil

I assume you have an older style indirect injection unit. Try a diesel specialist to get the pump output tested. Despite what all the diesel fans say, diesels don't run forever, and pumps, injectors and ecus are expensive, just as they are on any vehicle. God knows how much the high pressure pumps are, running at 20,000 psi.

Phil, If its a Vectra 2.0 the reference to the low pressure is that this model doesn't have an intercooler but is still the Bosch high pressure pump.
A diesel specialist has to be your best recourse as they have the necessary equipment to diagnose the problem. There will certainly be a Bosch (your pump) or a Lucas one in your area.
It does seem to be an unusal one. I have never heard of a pump suddenly failing as yours has. I would have thought a slow deterioration was more likely. If your car will limp along to a specialist I would go for them rather than your normal garage who would certainly have to take your pump to them anyway.

Diesel Pumps can die suddenly, I had it happen two years ago on a Nissan Primera. Driving along, engine suddenly cuts out, had to towed to a main dealer, who diagnosed a defective pump. Thankfully the warrenty paid for the repair cost

I think the garage that the car is presently at is a diesel specialist. Assuming that, what sort of tests would I expect to be done on the car for somone to be 100% sure that it's the injector pump.
Thanks, Phil

Diagnosis came back a while ago.
Fault with the incremental angle sensor. I need a new fuel injector pump. Does anyone know what this sensor does and if there can be another reason for it reading out other than it being faulty (eg bad fuel etc).
If I get the injector pump replaced then how can I check to make sure it has really been done. Not that I think this garage is dishonest it's just when it comes to a part around the £1000 mark I'd like to actually be 100% sure it has been replaced!

Hi Phil,
do a search on google for "vectra diesel pumps"
You'll find someone who can help you.

Have you thought about sourcing a second hand pump? There must be alot from crashed vehicles out there, and should save you a shed load of cash. (Speaking as a Yorkshireman).

Thanks for the replies. Just been burnt with a second hand pump. Was said to be off a runner, acquired by the garage for a good price but ran worse than the pump on there at the moment. They obvioulsy returned the pump without paying but I'm still left with the bill for labour. Bit cautious of going down that road again as the labour costs could start overtaking the parts costs!
