I have just started getting a grating noise (like metal rubbing on metal) when I press the brake. The brakes are working fine and it is only when I press the brake pedal that I get this sound. What is it liely to be and is it going to cost me a fortune to repair?!!

In my (not very technical) opinion, it sounds like your brake pads may have worn down to their metal seatings, thus rubbing directly on your discs...
However, I'm sure someone else will confirm/deny this suggestion...
Good luck!
|
|
Sounds like worn pads - need replacing, and maybe the disks as well, if they are badly scored.
or
b) something caught between the disk and the pad.
or
(c) One of the caliper bolts coming loose

Rough pricing to get this fixed?

See my reply in technical.
Price is irrelevant, it must be done quickly

If it's just pads, should be under £50 for a pair fitted unless it's an expensive car.

I would go to Kwikfit *as soon as possible* in case the discs are getting damaged by the brake pad/shoe backing. If you go to a brake/tyre place that says you need new discs, get a second opinion from another place. It is normal for discs to be ridged slightly.
|
Discs are not ridged when new, but it is actually helpful when a slight ridge has worn, since what happens then is that the pad backing plate rubs on the ridge before the pad material is completely exhausted and the braking surface damaged by metal to metal contact.
However, if you are servicing the car properly the low brake pad situation should have been picked up and the pads changed before you got to that point.

This isn't Dave18's mum by chance is it?

I know, I'm new to this and didn't know where to put it so it is in both. I am checking both so don't feel you need to duplicate replies.

Sounds like time to get some new brake linings to me. It shouldn't cost too much provided you did it soon, before you score deep grooves into the discs/drums.

DiD,
Tell us the type of car and it will be easier to think of the likely cost.

Gayle is it??
The pads for your 405 are about £15 at Halfords, good price. If you haven't damaged the discs add perhaps another £20 labour for just fitting the pads.
Discs are about £70 a pair at Halfords I think, plus fitting. That is a rubbish price and I'd hope to supply discs for less than £50/pair depending on exact model.
Anyway it will pay to get the job done very quickly to save the discs if possible.
David W
|
Yep, its me. OK, so I need to find out if it just the pads or the disks as well? Kwikfit have just told me that discs are £70 each! Do Halfords do the fitting as well then?
Thanks for you help David (again)!!
|
The big Halfords branches that do servicing etc obviously will; let's hope you are near one!
|
Are Quick Fit saying £140 for a pair of discs plus the pads? That's going to take them up to around £180-£200 all in??
Bit pricey if so. There are loads of smaller garages who would be pleased to do this at a sensible cost. I would aim for a price under £150 for pads and discs fitted, perhaps nearer £100 if you're very lucky.
Anyway we'll hope it is just the pads.
Roughly where are you?

I work in Epsom and live in Sutton. Can you suggest anywhere? At present I am hoping to rope my friend into doing it for me so it will only cost me for the pads and the dinner and wine!!!

Drift Bridge garage appears in HJ's Good Garages Guide on this site.

I'm 25 minutes up the road. You *might* be able to pursuade Mr Andrew Moorey to have a look - although he's an engines man and might feel above merely slipping a brake pads on. If he'll do it he's cheap, v. competent and trustworthy.
There are *loads* of motorfactors in the area. The last set of discs I bought (for a fiesta) cost 7 quid for Brembo discs. (yes seven)
Hopefully your friend will do it. It would be tragic to let a garage to such a simple task.

Toad why do I have this strange feeling we won't see you at practice session this week??

Gayle
If you havent worked it out yet(from the prices) KF may be a shade pricey! And that is before they discover any other work that may be needed.
If you want other peoples less obtuse comments on the working practices of fast fit establishments do a search on "parts" of the name.
Best of luck

Toad why do I have this strange feeling we won't see you at practice session this week??
Do you think women like blokes who shear their caliper retaining bolts, partially drill them out taking large amounts of caliper with them and then burst into tears and give up leaving the car immobile?
Seriously, I felt I should have offered to help but if the weather's good I'm away and if the weather's bad a) I won't want to crawl around wet tarmac in Sutton b) It only takes one sheared bolt or rounded nut to turn a 5 minute job into a 5 hour job. Then if I reach an impasse she's got an expensive job on her hands and I'll suffer guilt.
I'll work on the cars of close friends who understand that jobs don't always (ever?) go to plan. Male friends I'm prepared to provide moral support while they do the work.
That said, nobody ever listens to me. I suggested to one guy at work not to use a torque wrench on his sump plug & only do the Filter finger tight . Filter needed 14 *inch* pounds. He used a *torque wrench* on it set at 14 *foot* pounds. Then he stripped the thread on his sump by failing to hear the click.

A rip-off. Andyspares sell Bendix 405 discs for £14.50 (vented) or £9.45 (unvented). Branch at Robin Hood Way, Kingston Vale SW15 or next day mail order. Cheaper brand is £10.00/£4.50. All plus VAT

Europarts (www.eurocarparts.com) also now do Peugeot parts. I've only used them once, so far, and the price and service was excellent on that occasion.
|
I thought Andyspares became part of Euro car parts but obviously not, as they have their own web sites..

No. As it says on their web site, Andyspares is part of GSF - German Swedish French Group. (Don't mention Eurocarparts to Andy or GSF unless you want to cause bad feelings!)
By the way, these and "parts4peugeot" web links are listed under Parts in the HJ FAQ1.
Everytime Gayle (D-I-D) posts her problem here (which I dowelcome), it does makes me wonder why or whether she considers it not worth asking her Professional Engineer colleagues at W S Atkins in Epsom for help and advice. It would be interesting to know her answer to this.

PS: All my posts come a really useful message.

To answer that question, I work at Head office in Marketing so do not come into direct contact with many of the engineers.

Thank you to everyone for your help. I have now replaced my brake pads (well an engineer friend of mine has replaced my brake pads!) and the car is running fine.
Until next time, thanks!!!
