Don`t know if i`m on right thread, but wonder if anyone can help. My husband parked car while going for chinese, came back out and started engine and it revved, he didn`t really think anything of it and proceeded to put car into reverse and car sped back crashed into side of car behind and went over middle embankment to other side of road, while all this was happening he was hitting brake and son was pulling up hand brake and the car still would not stop. He said the car reversed at an incredible speed, yet he had not touched the accelerator. luckily they were ok, but i am worried about this car as i have read about sticking accelerator problems on this car. can anyone give advice, thanks.

Is this an automatic?
Having driven a C3 1.4 auto, I find it hard to believe that the brakes and handbrake together weren't powerful enough to stop the car.
Most common cause for sticking accelerator is a loose carpet mat.

Well you might find it hard to believe but you were not in the car, and no it`s not an automatic and there wasn`t a loose mat. The only reason the car stopped was the bump as the car rehit the road and released the accelerator pedal. Have since found out that a sticking accelerator is a problem in not only this car but new mini and quite a few others. There is another report on website where same C3 nearly crashed into cars in front and the brakes were used and did not work. That person had to steer the car onto hard shoulder and switch off engine before car stopped!

Without doubting the scenario, why didnt he depress the clutch again? Or did he and the car continued?
It sounds as though the pedal was stuck down (?) as opposed to reving of its own accord with the pedal untouched?
More info may help more comments?

Car just back from insurance company who looked into this for me. Problem is with car revving at up to 2000 rpm whilst idling! and have been advised that this should be fixed under warranty by citroen as car is under 2 years old and only has 2,300 miles on the clock. Also been advised by legal department that if they do not admit liability i should take them to court.

I totally believe how your accelerator revved. I have a similar problem with my 2003 1.4 diesel c3. Whilst waiting at a roundabout in first gear, i just started to pull away, when the accelerator pedal pulled away from my foot as if the cable had snapped. the car shot forward nearly hitting a car that had just pulled away in front of me. Fortunately, I dipped the clutch and hit the brakes and turned off the ignition all within a couple of seconds. a passerby helped me push the car to the side of the road as I told him "I think the accelerator cable had snapped". When I got back into the car, I noticed the Accelerator pedal had returned to its correct position, so I started the engine and all was normal again.
I called the next day to my local Citroen dealer, spoke to a technician who told me that what I had described was impossible.
Since then, whilst driving off in first gear(briskly) the accelerator has stayed down for several seconds, revving hard, then returned to normal.
Anyone got any ideas, other than pedal caught on carpet.
