Hi, I am planning to drive to Majorca in summer 2009 and would welcome any suggestions as to best routes, stop overs, Ferries etc. My plan is to drive there and stay over on route and return by Ferry from Spain to the UK.
Thanks in advance!

CMP,
I drive from Norfolk to just South of Alicante each summer.
My route is Dover-Calais then down through Reims, Dijon, Lyon, Montpellier. Pick up the Med on me left and keep going through Barcelona and Valencia. Driving time to Valencia is about 15 hours.
How many stops are you looking at making? I have stopped a couple of times on the outskirts of Barcelona in a very nice hotel that was reasonably priced.
Couple of things to note.
DONT travel on the first weekend in August. France goes on holiday to the Med this weekend and its a nightmare on the roads.
Do go through the middle of Lyon (the motorway runs through). It breaks the journey up nicely.
Ferry to the islands goes from Denia and possibly Valencia.
I have heard bad reports about driving round Madrid, something you would have to do if you take the Plymouth - Santander ferry.
I will dig out the hotel info if you require it.

Hi there
We are a family of 6 and saw your post-i hate flying and we would love to drive to mallorca this summer-are you able to send me details of your routes and stopovers and costs-be really interested to see if we could do it cheaper than 6 flights-prices are mental this year!
Really appreciate your help on this

You have replied to a post from November 2008. Anything they can offer as advice based on that trip will be outdated surely?
Furthermore Majorca, including the ferry, it not only a long way driving but costly. Have you not considered other options? If this old thread drifts it will quickly be locked since it is nearly 18 months old. What new can be added to the old discussion.

Wouldn't it be cheaper (and obviously quicker) to fly and hire a car when you get there? Or is the drive the main bit of the holiday?
Where in the UK are you coming from? Although pricey a ferry to Santander might reduce driving by quite a bit. Then you'd be fresh to drive to Barcelona before getting the ferry to Palma.

rtj,
For some it probably is quicker and cheaper.
For me? There's 5 of us. I can get there and back for the cost of one possibly two flights and we have our own car while there.
The kids dont seem to mind it, they have their games and a DVD in the back.

I quite like taking the car on holiday. Don't do it absolutely every year but I don't mind the driving and you can turn it into a bit of adventure. Anything which avoids the indignity of modern air travel gets my vote ! The only downside for me is the inevitability that your passengers will see this as an opportunity to bring the "kitchen sink".

I can't add much except envy, cmp.
We go to Menorca each year on a fly and car hire basis but I look at the ferries coming in from Barcelona to Mahon harbour on see myself and car on one at some point.
Good luck.

Car hire on Spanish islands in August - cheap - Hah!
Use the journey through France to see/stay somewhere interesting.

Thanks for everyones comments and especially to Norfolk Driver for your suggestions/ advice. Don't worry about the Hotel in Barcelona as we will be planning to stopping before then.
We go as a family of 4 to Majorca every year and always fly/ rent a car and we fancy a change this year.
