2001 1.4 Brake discs - Doc
The front pads need changing (after 15000 miles)
and the discs have a noticeable lip on them, although they are not scored or cracked.
Total mileage of car is 38000.
Why do discs have a service limit?
What would be the effect if I ignored the wear and just changed the pads?

Also, having looked in the workshop manual, it seems that the discs are not mechanically fixed to the hub. Is this correct?

The older micra has no mechanical fixing, nor does my 2000 Primera 2.0.
Easy to change - Just remove the wheel and caliper.
I ran a mile from my Neighbours Hyundai Accent - Wheel bearing is in the disk.

I only changed the pads on my Primera with a 1mm lip. No problems encountered in 20K miles. Most of my driving is motorway, so little braking.

I don't know why they have a service limit.
Mechanical interference?
Less material to dissipate the heat?
There should be some measurements/limits in the service manual.

Nissan are reasonable for service parts but the brakes are quite pricey.
You can get mintex disc/pad sets from ebay quite cheaply. Recommended by other Nissan owners. Any decent make should be suitable. EBC green stuff for clean alloys!

SHMBO has a 99 Micra 1.0. The 1.4 must be quite nippy.

Discs have a service limit because they wear and if too thin can crack as they get hot.

Depends on how worn the disc is if it has a lip on the disc on the outer edge this will grind into the new pads and cause them to squeek on braking.

15,000mls is poor for a set of pads how do you drive? is the foot on the brake all the way down a hill?

Try a new driving style you should be able to get more than that even round town.

Got a filing sander? Put it into first and grind it off.

But as suggested check they're not worn beyond the manufacturers recommendation.
