i am told that after 40,000 miles, my rear pads are 85% worn and need replacing.
My dealer is quoting £145 to do this.
is it safe to use another firm, say kwik fit? Will they have the right parts, o as good a job and not harm all the ridiculous VW computers etc?

On the basis of an estimate I got for my car (not a Golf) I would think that might include the discs as well as the pads.

Assuming the pads were VW ,I'd be surprised if theyre 85% worn after 40k. Unless your name is Lewis Hamilton. I'd take it to an independant and ask his opinion and advice, he can do the work just as well as a main agent for a lot less money. No need for specialist VW tools or computers.

Not so sure, chuck another ton on top and you have almost the quote for supply and fit rear pads to a 3 series compact....think of a number and tack a row of noughts on.
HN, why not get a manual and a set of pads from GSF or Euro, (they are likely to be the identical make as the ones you remove) and fit them yourself, one of the easier and most satisfying diy jobs you can do.
Probably around 15 to 25 quid for good quality rear pads from those good people, they will no doubt be able to supply a manual as well.

You will also need to spend about 20 pounds on a caliper rewind tool from GSF or halfords. You can use a long nose pier put you risk damaging the seals

I recently replaced the rear pads on a 2003 Polo we have in the family (a rubbish unreliable car, but that's another story). I think the Golf has very similar, if not the same, rear brakes because the Golf was also listed on the box.
OE pads (ATE brand) were about £25 from the local Eurocarparts. I managed to retract the pistons with no bother, but ECP sell the rewind tool if you need it. You also need a 13mm and a 15mm spanner for the retaining bolts. Even doing it very slowly it took me no more than a hour to do the job.
As an aside I found that the handbrake mechanism part of the caliper was sticking on one side of the car. This required a rebuilt caliper from ECP (just over £100). ECP had them on the shelf and I was told its a very very common problem with this type of caliper.
